“Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires].” (James 1:19-20)
As Christians, we are called to promote the righteousness of God in our daily living, that is, people should see Christ in us through our character which is the best way to first preach the Gospel. To be slow to anger does not only promote the righteousness of God but is also not good for your health. When every little thing gets you angry it means you have no rule over your spirit. Proverbs 25:28 says, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” It means when you fail to exercise the fruit of the Spirit “self-control” to control your anger even though someone wronged you, your spirit is broken, and no guide. The devil will come in to still your peace, and joy, and even afflict you with sickness such as high blood pressure because he fired his weapon of anger against you so he can come in to steal and because your wall is broken and you couldn’t defend or resist it. That is what the devil does and his mission is “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” John 10:10
Joshua and the children of Israel were able to conquer the city of Jericho because they first fell down flat the walls of Jericho, then they went into the city and possessed it. see Joshua 6:1-21. So, the devil will to any Believer that has no rule over his spirit, that is exactly what Proverbs 25:28 says, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
Proverbs 14:29 says, “He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is hasty of spirit exposes and exalts his folly.” When you are slow to anger, it means you have the understanding of who you are in Christ and you have submitted to Christ in you to control your anger. But, when you are quick to be angry, Proverbs 14:29 says you expose and exalt your foolishness, and Proverbs 24:9 also says, “The thought of foolishness is sin.” That is when you fail to control your anger you sin, and “good sense makes a man restrain his anger, and when you overlook an offense that could make you angry, Proverbs 19:11 says, you glory.
Meditate on James 1:19 “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.” practice often holding your breath and keeping quiet (slow to speak) even when you could talk to respond. It will take you there to be able to control your anger. The word is spirit and life, allow the word of God to minister to your spirit, and you will be promoting the righteousness of God.
