AI moves fast. Resumes don't. The real skill is beyond the resume.

How students are showcasing AI skills on Handshake

In 2026, the share of jobs and internships requiring AI skills has surged across industries—not just in tech, but in finance, healthcare, manufacturing, education, and beyond. AI literacy is quickly becoming a baseline expectation, not a differentiator.

And early talent is responding.

This year’s graduating seniors are mentioning AI skills on their resumes at twice the rate of the Class of 2022, with 74% of those mentions tied to real-world projects, not just coursework.

But that creates a new challenge:

  • For talent: if everyone claims AI skills, how do you prove what you can actually do?
  • For employers: how do you identify talent with the AI skills needed to make an impact?

From AI claims to tactical portfolios

Early talent is already starting to answer this shift by sharing real projects directly on their Handshake profiles, turning AI from a claimed skill into demonstrated capability.

For employers, this unlocks something critical: a clearer signal of quality, grounded in demonstrated skills, real work, and applied experience.

Handshake is building new features so students don’t just learn AI skills, they can showcase them. The AI Showcase, which recently launched to employers, highlights real-world projects created by early talent, making these applied skills highly visible.

To take it a step further, we worked with OpenAI to bring AI tools directly to students through the Handshake x OpenAI Codex Creator Challenge. This challenge focused on giving students hands-on access to create and demonstrate AI skills.

Leading employers like GEICO, L’Oréal, Uber, Salesforce, JPMorgan Chase, KPFF, UBS, Sikich, and ZS Associates partnered with Handshake on the Codex Creator Challenge because they recognize what this shift represents: AI skills are now table stakes. The real question is no longer whether to hire for AI, but how to identify talent that can actually apply it.

What this means for employers

The data tells us that early talent isn’t being displaced by AI—they’re being amplified by it. But hiring for that potential requires a shift.

Research shows that AI delivers the biggest workforce gains for early career professionals by boosting output, accelerating skill development, and even reducing attrition among junior hires.

Because in an AI-driven workforce, resumes alone aren’t enough. This is a show-not-tell moment, and Handshake makes that shift possible.

Instead of relying on self-reported skills, you can see AI capabilities in action through projects, experiences, and tangible work that demonstrate how candidates are actually using AI tools. The result is a faster, more confident way to identify qualified, AI-ready talent and bring them into your pipeline ready to contribute.

As AI erases traditional job boundaries, resumes don't showcase the creativity required for jobs of the future. For example, a Marketing major might be building an app tracking stock changes, while an English major is using AI to analyze stock prices in New York. Handshake’s new features give these students the opportunity to showcase these projects.

How can you put this into action today

Look for real work, not just claims. Students aren’t just listing AI skills, rather they’re building with them. From automating workflows to creating custom GPTs, you can directly assess how candidates apply AI to real problems.

Build a pipeline with proof built in. AI skills showcased on Handshake give you early access to candidates who are already demonstrating how they think and work with AI, so you can engage them before they ever enter the traditional application funnel.

Build your strategy around where AI talent is going. Discuss with your Handshake team to tap into a growing ecosystem of applied AI work—so you can stay ahead as new tools and signals emerge.
