The US artist, who recently described herself as a Zionist, signed off the X announcement with the hashtag "#FUCKPALESTINE."
Azealia Banks will no longer be performing at Boomtown or Maiden Voyage this summer.
The US artist broke the news on X earlier today, June 25th. Both festivals then confirmed on Instagram Stories that she's no longer on their respective lineups, and pledged to find a suitable replacement.
Banks's X post claims that the fallout stemmed from a disagreement around Palestine: "The promoters have been stressing me out for weeks trying to force me to say free Palestine and threatening to cut me from the bill because I won't say free Palestine and I'm not dealing with the threats and I’m not putting on a fucking hijab." She signed off the announcement with the hashtag "#FUCKPALESTINE."
A spokesperson for Boomtown rejected these claims, insisting that the festival "does not and will never dictate the personal views and beliefs of performers" in comments made to The Standard. RA has reached out to Maiden Voyage for comment.
It's the latest in a series of anti-Palestine tweets from the New York rapper, who recently described herself as a Zionist. On June 2nd, she said that Palestine isn't a country. "It should all be Israel," she wrote. "Palestine can't support itself without help from other countries so the people should just leave or become naturalised Israelis." Later that day, Banks tweeted that "no black person should be supporting Palestine."
Boomtown takes place at Matterley Bowl in Hampshire from August 6th through 10th. Maiden Voyage returns to South London's Burgess Park on August 9th.
