Despite numerous reports conducted by the United States government, human rights organizations, and journalists that have refuted the Bush administration’s framing of Abu Ghraib, polling data suggest that a majority of the American people have accepted the administration’s framing. Therefore, I ask the question: How has the American public understood the Abu Ghraib scandal? In an attempt to answer this question, I examine how President George W. Bush used three rhetorical frames to fix the meaning of Abu Ghraib and consider whether the media supported or contested those frames. Specifically, I analyze 15 speeches by and interviews with President Bush and the 57 separate newscasts on ABC, CBS, and NBC that addressed the Abu Ghraib Scandal in May 2004. Based on this analysis, I offer a new theory about the culture industry’s cycle of assumptions and posit that the public filtered the simple, coherent, and consistent framing of the issue by President Bush and the news media’s simultaneous support of and opposition to the Bush frames through existing political opinions and accepted Bush’s framing of Abu Ghraib.

It is often asserted that West German New Leftists "discovered the Third World" in the pivotal decade of the 1960s. Quinn Slobodian upsets that storyline by beginning with individuals from the Third World themselves: students from Africa, Asia, and Latin America who arrived on West German campuses in large numbers in the early 1960s. They were the first to mobilize German youth in protest against acts of state violence and injustice perpetrated beyond Europe and North America. The activism of the foreign students served as a model for West German students, catalyzing social movements and influencing modes of opposition to the Vietnam War. In turn, the West Germans offered the international students solidarity and safe spaces for their dissident engagements. This collaboration helped the West German students to develop a more nuanced, empathetic understanding of the Third World, not just as a site of suffering, poverty, and violence, but also as the home of politicized individuals with the capacity and will to speak in their own names.

The colonial education in India served as an institution of social control, which was anchored in the western ethnocentric ideas of "orality" of non-western societies in contrast to European "literacy". The paper seeks to analyze the colonial anthropological construction of knowledge that served as a premise for launching mass literacy in the late nineteenth century colonial Punjab. The illiteracy of the Indian population was argued on the assumed "orality" of the social processes of knowledge transmission and provided the colonial justification for education of a "traditional" society, deemed lower in the scale of evolutionary development. Drawing on the literacy-orality debate, the paper questions the binarism of the dominant theoretical formulations of the oral and literate societies that continue to inform the history and pedagogy of education as well as anthropological approaches to the study of South Asian culture. Notwithstanding the liberal ideologies of education, school as a technology of discipline became critical to the normalization of the colonial rule to the vast majority of people. It also emerged as an institutional site for the use and elaboration of discipline as a general formula for domination and control. Schools became not only instruments for inculcating a "literate" consciousness, a Euro-centric awareness of the English grammar and visual norms but also as technologies of rule deployed as the key instrument for the technical transformation of individuals and societies through discipline and regulation

As a contribution to a responsive and critical materialist ethics of environments and animals, this essay reexamines the significance of nature and animals in the critical social theory of Theodor Adorno. In response to the anthropocentric stance of intersubjective discourse and recognition in recent figures associated with the Frankfurt School, such as Jürgen Habermas and Axel Honneth, I argue for the ecological import of the aporetic dialectic of nature and society in Adorno and Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment and Adorno's later works. Adorno's continuing confrontation with the "domination of nature" traces the tensions between the ideological construction and resistance of "nature" as well as the instrumentalization and implicit disruptive promise of sensuous life. These tensions indicate the material and bodily bonds between human and animal happiness and suffering and the ambiguous role of mimesis in both domination and emancipation. Adorno insisted on the critical prospect of an unforced and non-coercive freedom that brings us toward the object and responsibility for socially and historically mediated and non-identical natural life.

In terms of their circulation and lasting influence, schoolbooks are at least equal to the print media. Like newspapers and magazines, they are daily reading – in this case, obligatory reading – and as such they shape the political and social attitudes of their audience. This volume, part of the series on the European Jewish press, examines the images of Jews and Sinti in German schoolbooks since the postwar era. The view of „the Other“ in the tradition of Jewish thought serves as a touchstone for this analysis: Perpetually at the threshold, simultaneously included in and excluded from the majority culture, in the darkness of the ghetto or in the light of Enlightenment salons, in universities or in prison camps, over the centuries Jewish intellectuals wrote „marginal commentaries“ on key texts of European philosophy. These critical interpretations form the prism through which the discourses on cultural minorities in post-1945 schoolbooks are read.
