"Resumo
A dissertação apresentada centra-se no estudo da atividade piscatória marítima nos séculos finais da Idade Média, incidindo na costa compreendida entre os rios Minho e Mondego. Após a perceção do conhecimento produzido até ao momento pela historiografia portuguesa e duma breve contextualização relativa à evolução da zona costeira, procura responder a algumas questões basilares para uma melhor compreensão da atividade. Dessa forma, enunciará as espécies piscícolas capturadas, os aprestos utilizados na faina, as tipologias de embarcação associadas à captura e ao comércio do produto pescado, e finalmente, terminará com um capítulo dedicado aos principais centros de pesca da região.

Abstract
The thesis presented focuses on the study of maritime fishing activity in the late Middle Age centuries. The study case, will focus the coast between the rivers Minho and Mondego. After the perception of the knowledge generated to date by Portuguese historiography and a brief background on the evolution of the coastline zone, seeks to answer some basic questions to a better understanding of the activity. As a result, set out the fish species caught, the equipment used in the labor, the types of vessel associated with capture and trade of fish products, and finally, ends with a chapter devoted to the main fishing centers in the region.

L’objectiu ha estat utilitzar el cas concret del Palamós modern per introduir-nos en l’estudi de l’associacionisme marítim i pesquer anterior a les convulsions polítiques i administratives provocades per les reformes introduïdes per la monarquia il·lustrada a partir de la segonameitat del segle XVIII. La Matrícula de Mar va capgirar radicalment la situació delsector pesquer, a banda un model associatiu extern al model confraternal devocional català que aquí presentem. La intenció és veure quina era la situació precedent, en què escaracteritzava i com encaixava l’associacionisme pesquer català en elpanorama confraternal medieval i modern: solucionar, en resum, aquestd ecalatge primigeni. Abans, però, caldria parlar breument de les bases materials, socials i culturals del sector, i molt en concret del paper, rellevantal nostre entendre, de la religió i de les institucions eclesiàstiques en totaquest procés.

Abstract:

Waterpower has always made a great contribution to the national economy, especially in the early 20th century, when the pace of industrialisation accelerated in Finland. Fishing, in contrast, is a legacy of the age of economic self-sufficiency, although today it is mainly a leisure practice. Nevertheless, the development of water rights legislation shows that fishing has had and still has a surprisingly high symbolic value, although the traditional Nordic “everyman’s right” has been minimized in fishing.

The interest paid to fishing in legislation promoted conservation, even before conservation had become an established concept. The 1902 Water Rights Act is of special importance as it includes and reinforces some old fishing rights principles, while seeking to balance the demands of various interest groups."
