In How Brands Become Icons (2004), Holt shows the different
ways in which certain brands draw on cultural imagery, myths,
and history to create identity. In so doing, brands both construct
and co-opt a mythical βelsewhereβ involving βcollective
memoriesβ, and βimaginary geographiesβ. The question remains
as to how this process operates in countries such as Russia, where
the politics of identity are particularly contentious, and βcollective
memoriesβ are often hotly disputed. Another issue concerns the
contribution social media can make in this area, since they
constitute a tremendous opportunity for brands to construct the
narratives that Holt suggest lie at the heart of brand-making
mythology. In order to begin to address this dual gap in the
literature, we propose a conceptual paper, based on a case study
of one specific Russian brand, AB-Inbevβs βSiberian Crownβ.
This brand is chosen first because of the specific challenges it
faces in the market place, and second on account of the particular
strategy it adopts to overcome them. As we show, this strategy
involves using Facebook in order, first, to install beer as Russiaβs
new national drink, and second, to establish itself as the ultimate
Russian beer brand. Our paperβs contribution lies most
importantly in the way it extends Holtβs work on iconic brands
into virtual and non-Western contexts. Given our findings, more
work needs to be done on the ways in which social media can
help brands manage meaning during turbulent times β not just in
Russia but in a wide variety of markets.

The fall 2014 military draft to the Russian army differs from previous conscription campaigns in that, for first time since the early 1990s, the draft will include conscripts from Chechnya. In addition, the number of conscripts from Dagestan was doubled. Observers have connected the Kremlinβs increased interest in attracting North Caucasians β previously excluded from the mandatory service β to serve in the Russian army to Russiaβs involvement in Eastern Ukraine and the dwindling numbers of ethnic Russian conscripts. Yet the actual reasons might be more symbolic and practical, tied to the precondition of military service for government employment eligibility in Russia.

This book explores developments in the three major societies of the South Caucasus β Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia β focusing especially on religion, historical traditions, national consciousness, and political culture, and on how these factors interact. It outlines how, despite close geographical interlacement, common historical memories and inherited structures, the three countries have deep differences; and it discusses how development in all three nations has differed significantly from the countriesβ declared commitments to democratic orientation and European norms and values. The book also considers how external factors and international relations continue to impact on the three countries.

Based on fieldwork conducted between 2008 and 2011, this article explores the role of roads in enabling and limiting the movement of people and goods in Tajikistanβs Eastern Pamirs. The article focuses on the Pamir Highway and a newly established trade route linking Tajikistan with China. Besides materially facilitating mobility, both roads serve as trajectories for opportunities, but often also signify the lack of such to those who live along them. This article thus seeks to analyse the shifting roles of roads against the backdrop of past and present state dispensations, shifting ideologies and newly emerging economic practices. By emphasising roads as both enabling and limiting spatial entities shaped by materiality, politics and economics, this article argues, on the one hand, that roads are important factors in directing and accelerating the mobility of people and goods and, on the other, that roads are also symbols of immobility inasmuch as they set limitations on the movement of people.
