"In this paper I discuss selected aspects of the case of the Sami people in Norway, their struggle for influence over their own education institutions, and for equal as well as special rights in the Norwegian education system. Compared to many other Indigenous peoples, the case of the Sami in Norway appears to be a story of success. For example, the Norwegian Sami have their own education institutions, and they are among the most educated Indigenous peoples in the world. I also use the Sami case to reflect upon the relation between education and the self-identity of cultural minorities, here drawing upon (and discussing) the work of German social philosopher Axel Honneth.

I conclude that recognition is an important aspect of learning and education and that Honneth’s critical theory of recognition has explanatory force when analyzing the postcolonial situation of the Sami people of Norway. The Sami struggle for inclusion and influence over their own situation has to a large extent been fought as a struggle for rights and for cultural recognition. However, I also pointed to some problems in Honneth’s focus on the nation state as a given analytic entity; the legitimacy of the Norwegian nation state and its territorial claims, for example, have always been called into question by (some of) the Sami."

This thesis explores how people struggle to make livable lives in the conditions of existence of seeking asylum in the UK. The study is based on ethnographic research, conversations and participant observation, with people seeking asylum in Manchester. Grounding the research in their narratives is a contribution to decolonizing knowledge and doing justice to the sentience of people who are marginalized and pathologized. The narratives are brought into dialogue with feminist and decolonial philosophy and political theory, and with empirical studies of “refugeedom” from a number of disciplines, to produce a new field of connection from which to map the terrain involved in theorizing livability. While the whole thesis seeks to respond to the narratives, there is a detailed focus on three dimensions which participants emphasize as crucial to livability: settlement in Manchester; the prohibition of employment; the asylum application procedures. These are moments in which livability is claimed as both ethics and practice. From the perspective of the narratives and the ethics which permeate them, livability opens up into questions of recognition, social justice and care. People claim commonality: recognition as human, equality and inclusion in social goods, and care in public settings. These are the practical and ethical supports of livability. The narratives point also towards critiques of “refugeedom”, the policies and practices that form the discursive and material conditions within which people seeking asylum attempt to make livable lives.

This article aims at pointing out which are the meaning and function of saññā as they can be inferred from a careful reading of some relevant passages of the Pāli Canon. As far as the meaning of saññā is concerned, the discussion stresses the fact that the renderings “perception” and “apperception” seem to overinterpret the actual function/activity of saññā. Also the translations “idea” or “ideation” appear to refer only to a part or aspect of the activity of saññā. “Cognition”, moreover, should be discarded in favour of a more adequate “recognition”, a term that conceptually conveys both the senses of cognizing and naming. As regards its role within the perceptive act, saññā is said to take place after sensation (vedanā), its task being to collect the information coming from vedanā and to organize it into a datum that can be presented to, and handled by, the consiouness/mind (viññāṇa/citta). For this reason saññā is reputed to play a central role in the process of constitution of the so-called sense of Ego, as opposed to the object perceptually grasped.

Abstract: In recent years seaweeds increasingly attracted interest in the search for new drugs and have been shown to be a primary source of bioactive natural products including antibiotics. In the present investigation the antimicrobial activity of Gracilariopsis longissima lipidic extract was assayed and its chemical characterization was carried out by means of advanced analytical techniques such as gas-chromatography and multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. G. longissima lipidic extract showed an antibacterial activity against several Vibrio species. These results are interesting considering both the resistance against antibiotics developed by vibrios and the need to control fish and shellfish diseases due to vibriosis. Analysis of fatty acid methyl esters performed by gas-chromatography showed that palmitic acid methyl ester (16:0) was the predominant saturated fatty acid (42%), whilst, among monounsaturated fatty acids, oleic acid methyl ester (18:1) prevailed (8.5%). Since the palmitic acid represents the main component of fatty acids we hypothesized its involvement in the antibacterial activity observed. However, a pure sample of palmitic acid did not show an antibacterial activity. The fatty acid profile of G. longissima revealed also an interesting composition in polyunsaturated fatty acids and in particular the ratio of ω-3 to ω-6 fatty acids was >1 thus suggesting that this macroalga may be used as a natural source of ω3. Moreover, the 1H NMR spectrum in CDCl3 of algal lipid fraction shows the characteristic signals of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids as well as other metabolites. Interestingly, in the lipid extract the presence of poly hydroxy butirrate, a linear biodegradable and biocompatible polyester, was clearly identified by NMR spectroscopy. In conclusion, the lipidic extract of G. longissima on account of its antimicrobial activity, nutritional value and content in biodegradable and biocompatible polyester represents an interesting potential biotechnological resource.
** Highlights: ► We report the composition of the seaweed Gracilariopsis longissima lipidic extract ► The analyses were carried out by gas-cromatatography and NMR spectroscopy ► The antimicrobial activity of G. longissima lipidic extract was evidenced ► The lipid extract showed a ratio of ω-3 to ω-6 fatty acids >1and the presence of poly hydroxy butirrate ► Based on these features the alga is an interesting potential biotechnological resource

The recent war in Georgia followed by Moscow’s recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, just as the US-led war on terror and the war in the former Yugoslavia and recognition of Kosovo that attended it, call attention to certain internal inconsistencies within the English School’s concept of “international society.” A rigorous analysis of three sets of the school’s contentions suggests on close reading how and why different perspectives on the concept itself lead to different understandings and interpretations of the effects these actions had on the state of international society.

"This volume focuses on Hegel's philosophy of action in connection to current concerns. Including key papers by Charles Taylor, Alasdair MacIntyre, and John McDowell, as well as eleven especially commissioned contributions by leading scholars in the field, it aims to readdress the dialogue between Hegel and contemporary philosophy of action. Topics include: the nature of action, reasons and causes; explanation and justification of action; social and narrative aspects of agency; the inner and the outer; the relation between intention, planning, and purposeful behaviour; freedom and responsibility; and self-actualisation. This book will appeal alike to Hegel scholars and philosophers of action.
