"Few would dispute that the news picture, whether static or moving, photographic or autographic, is one of the most ubiquitous, powerful and controversial kinds of images today and that there is a long and complex history of the news picture still to be analyzed and explained. This two-day, interdisciplinary workshop — which includes scholars in fields ranging from art history and history to English, comparative literature, and communications — seeks to classify and comprehend those pictures that are news."

The coming months will witness the publication in English of the second volume of Peter Sloterdijk's Spheres trilogy, the magnum opus of an author who is currently intensely fashionable among architects. Sloterdijk embeds within that text what might appear to be a staggering claim: that architectural aspiration is ultimately responsible for the very conception of the Judeo-Christian God. This claim is validated by reference to the Tower of Babel, long a marker both of utopian aspiration and of anti-utopian doubt, a tower constructed within the enclosure of city walls that were themselves, in Sloterdijk's account, designed to protect the utopia of a tight community against the threat of an expanding world. Sloterdijk illustrates his text with an image taken from Uriel Birnbaum's 1924 Der Kaiser und der Architekt: itself a magnificently illustrated retelling of the story of Babel. But not only is Birnbaum himself radically opposed to utopian thought, whether artistic or political; his text might more readily be associated with Nietzsche's account of the death of God than with Sloterdijk's account of the birth of that God. This article explores the curious ambiguity of Birnbaum's position, drawing in part on his unpublished manuscript entitled “Wesen und Geschichte der Utopie.”

"In this article, the intellectual background of the modern world’s problems is studied by comparing the modern paradigm with traditional thought. For this reason, the author will attempt to determine the the defects of the modern mind mainly from the point view of tratidional thought. Considering the main characteristics of the modern mind, global ecological and moral crises will be dealt with. This structural area will be followed through sociologic theories in the article. In order to provide an in-depth understanding, traditional (Islamic) conceptual instruments like the intellect/heart, self (nefs) and soul (ruh) are proposed here to be used in the critique of modernity instead of using Cartesian dualist concepts like the soul and body. Thus, this article attempts to overcome the Euro-centric and modernist based area of discussion in order to evaluate the background of the factual problems that accompany modernity. In this context, the method of structural research of the traditional thought/traditionalist school which looks at the modern world’s dilemmas from a rooted criticism seems to be better equipped to perform a better analysis of these problems.

Key words: Modernity, Modern Mind, Traditional Thought, Islam, Self (nefs), Intellect, Reason."
