Philosophy of Images

Dijital imaj, 1991’de Bağdat’taki El Raşit Oteli’nden yapılan canlı yayınla, medyanın eşiğinde olduğu yeni çağı, insan bilincine savaş imgesinin eş zamanlı sunulmasıyla ilan etti. Televizyonun, savaşın ve etrafında örülen siyasal güç savaşımının yönlendirilmesinde belirleyici rol oynamasının kristalize olmuş haliydi CNN’in  Körfez Savaşı’na anında erişim sağlaması. Uluslararası olayların televizyonda nasıl yansıtıldığı, hükümetleri hareket etmeye zorlayacak siyasetler inşa edilmesi yönünde belirleyici oldu. Medya kuramcıları buna “CNN etkisi (CNN effect)” dedi. Buna göre, canlı yayın görüntüsünün izleyenlerin olaya bakış açısını, buna bağlı siyasal kararları ve hatta askeri savaş taktiklerini bile belirleyip yönlendirebildiğinin tespiti yapıldı. Tüm dünya ilk defa aynı anda bir yıkımın tanığı oldu. Bu etkinin okunmasını güçlendirecek bir diğer olay, beyinlerde terörist betimlemesinin “daha bir belirgin” hale gelmesini sağlayan 11 Eylül 2001’de ikiz kulelerin yıkılışı görüntülerini canlı izlememiz oldu. CNN etkisinin ana akım medya üzerindeki ilk somut etkisi, 24 saat canlı habercilik yapan kanalların bir anda sayıca yükselişe geçmesi ve tartışma kültürünü canlı yayınlanan imajlarla şekillendiren yeni siyasal aktörlerin ortaya çıkmasıdır. Arap Baharı’nda oynadığı rolle hafızamıza kazınan El Cezire de, karşı politik bir hat yaratılmasına neden olsa da, bu etkiye bir örnek olarak verilebilir. “El Cezire Etkisi (Al Jazeera Effect)” ve CNN Etkisi arasındaki ince hatta, yeni medyanın gücü televizyon ile birleşti ve dijital imajla politik duygulanımların birbiri üzerindeki kuvvetli etkisi ilk defa herkesin gözü önünde somut olarak eş zamanlı gözlemlendi.......

RESUMO
Nossa dissertação versa sobre o conceito de “pós-história” do filósofo Vilém Flusser, utilizando como base seu livro “Pós-história: vinte instantâneos e um modo de usar”. Nosso objetivo é através da explanação do conceito de pós- história e das influências causadas por tal situação, argumentar sobre as possibilidades de liberdade em uma sociedade tecnicista. Sendo que, para Flusser, essa liberdade só é possível através da arte. Em um tom otimista utiliza a arte como instrumento necessário para a modificação da situação em que nos encontramos. A partir disso é possível concluir que ultrapassar as máquinas e produzir arte permite às pessoas se perceberem como livres, capazes de fazer algo sozinhas, sem a utilização das máquinas e, com isso, se perceberem como seres humanos.

ABSTRACT
Our dissertation explores philosopher Vilém Flusser’s concept of “post- history”, using his book “Pós-história: vinte instantâneos e um modo de usar” as base. Our goal is to argue over the possibilities of freedom in a technical society through the explanation of the concept of “post-history” and the influence such situation exerts. To Flusser this freedom is possible only through art. Optimistically, he applies art as a necessary instrument to modify the situation we find ourselves in. As a consequence, it is possible to reach the conclusion that transcending machines and producing art allows people to acknowledge themselves as free, capable of doing something on their own, without the use of machines and, thus acknowledging themselves as human beings.

Obiettivo del contributo è dimostrare come le immagini giochino un ruolo fondamentale nel processo di formazione dell'atteggiamento filosofico perché permettono di mettere in discussione l'atteggiamento ordinario dall'interno. Si mette in risalto l'intrinseca negatività delle immagini soffermandosi in particolare sulle analisi dedicate da Benjamin e Husserl all'esperienza fotografica. Introducendo la nozione di inconscio ottico, Benjamin sostiene che il rivolgimento riflessivo avvenga nel soggetto fruitore d'immagini in modo inintenzionale. Nonostante Husserl sia il maggiore studioso della sfera intenzionale della coscienza, attraverso il confronto con Benjamin si cerca di mettere in risalto la dimensione inconscia, benché non passiva, implicata dall'idea husserliana del triplo oggetto della coscienza d'immagine. Nella parte finale del testo, si confronta la teoria mimetica della scrittura proposta da Benjamin con la teoria della scrittura proposta da Husserl nel saggio pubblicato postumo da Fink e valorizzato da Derrida, "Sull'origine della geometria".

Nella società dell'immagine, paradossalmente segnata dal primato della parola, un gruppo di filosofi e storici dell'arte indagano le ambiguità di ogni forma di rappresentazione. Dall'iconoclastia cristiana fino all'astrazione delle avanguardie artistiche del Novecento, un percorso nelle illusioni prodotte dall'immagine. Il volume contiene una raccolta di saggi sull'ambiguità delle immagini nella storia dell'Occidente.

Il saggio analizza, a partire dall'uso degli affreschi di Ambrogio Lorenzetti nel libro "Il buon Governo" di Luigi Einaudi (1954), il ruolo delle immagini nella costruzione dei legami sociali. In particolare, dopo una sintetica ricostruzione della filosofia dell'immagine occidentale, vengono delineate alcune linee sistematiche a partire dalla nozione patristica di oikonomia così come viene riletta da Marie-José Mondzain. L'obiettivo del saggio è mostrare come una riflessione extra-estetica sull'immagine possa offrire utili elementi per il ripensamento della razionalità economica e per l'analisi delle cornici simboliche del legame sociale.

In 1961 Hans Jonas identified the ability to make images as a differentia specifia of humans. The term homo pictor refers to the cultural anthropological dimension and the fundamental importance of the relationship between images and humans. It is not by accident, then, that analysis and interpretation of images are of great significance in the archaeological disciplines. Many material remains of past cultures carry images or pictorial elements that are invaluable in the interpretation of these cultures. Correspondingly, there is a broad spectrum of analytical methods that are employed to answer a variety of questions. While some of these methods of image analysis have their conceptual foundation in art history, others have been developed autonomously within the field of archaeology and without reference to interdisciplinary discourses. A consistent theoretical framework that would allow for a systematic conceptualisation of a discipline-specific or historic study of images in archaeology has not yet been articulated. Since the pictorial and the iconic turn there has been a vast trans-and interdisciplinary research on images and their perception under the categories of image science (Bildwissenschaften) and visual culture studies. The conference seeks to explore whether and how these contemporary developments can contribute to theories of the image and methods of image analysis within archaeology. Reciprocally, it will also be asked in what ways archaeology – due to its large material corpora and long scholarly tradition – could make a considerably larger contribution to the fields of image and visual culture studies than acknowledged to date – especially as the object of its research reaches back to the origins of humans and images and their relationship.

This paper aims at questioning the role of image and imagination in Descartes' Metaphysics, especially in the Meditations on First Philosophy, by holding both a certain doctrinal or theoretical discourse on image/imagination and the Cartesian use of images/imagination. Besides the fact that this rarely considered perspective prevents from freezing the original text, this strategy allows to highlight the ambiguity of theses notions, revealed through what is doing by the act of imagining compared to the act of conceiving with the understanding.

Extended abstract written for the 27–28 October 2016 Cagliari conference Normative Drawings and Deontic Artifacts. --- The ongoing task of common-sense philosophy, as I understand it, is to integrate the established results of science and scholarship into everyday thinking, that is, into common sense as historically evolving. Though changing over time, common sense is invariably realist, with common-sense philosophy, too, necessarily tending towards realism. Now contemporary common sense faces a problem when it comes to children's drawings. In drawings, common sense today expects the rules of naturalism and linear perspective to obtain. Children's drawings of course do not conform to those rules. Hence common sense, as also most of the earlier literature on the subject, regards children's drawings as deficient. By contrast, more recent literature, mainly under the influence of Rudolf Arnheim, emphasizes the creativity of children's drawings.
