"Using the palace records from the Vatican's Secret Archives, Ruprecht demonstrates that the Vatican museum was the brainchild of J.J. Winckelmann, the so-called father of Art History. Tracing both Winckelmann's secret involvement in the emergence of modern art museums and modern art history and their emergence from within religious institutions, the author offers a new perspective on the relationship of religion and art in the modern world.

"How was it that the first ‘profane’ museum, featuring the salacious sculpture of paganism, was established - within the Vatican itself - by the Catholic Church? Ruprecht immersed himself in the Vatican archives and, in a book that reads as an academic detective story, came up with a fascinating answer. He argues that the museum was the brainchild of J. J. Winckelmann, who made it possible by affecting a sea-change in the way the sculpture of antiquity was perceived: no longer as a handmaiden of religion, which had made it suspicious to the Church, but as art. And so the originator of the discipline of art history also turns out to have introduced both the modern conception of art and the institution that still conditions our understanding of it." - Alexander Nehamas, Professor of Philosophy and Edmund N. Carpenter, II Class of 1943 Professor in the Humanities, Princeton University; author of Nietzsche: Life as Literature

"It is not often that we are introduced with such artistry and with so humane a touch to a revolution of the mind which lies at the root of the modern imagination." - Peter Brown, Rollins Professor of History, Princeton University"

Based on the records of Vatican archives — the Roman Inquisition, the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and the Congregation of the Council, this article analyzes the policy of the Roman Catholic Church towards mixed marriages in multi-confessional European regions with special attention to Germany. Taking as an example the marriage alliance of Wolfgang Wilhelm of Neuburg and Katherina Charlotte of Zweibrücken I show how interweaving politics and religion influenced the dynamics of constructing and negotiating confessional boundaries as well as the actors’ strategies for shifting and overcoming these boundaries.  Extending my analysis to the broader German context, I show how mixed marriages suffered from an underlying tension and created some significant problems because they contradicted customary law and did not obey the rule of patriarchy. Because the search for solutions allowed — and sometimes required — the involvement of the secular authorities to control and reduce the potential for conflict, mixed marriages played a crucial role in enforcing secularization.

"An unpublished memorandum from the Archive of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs provides the opportunity to take an overall view on matters concerning Catholic Church governance at the beginning of the Pius X’s pontificate. The document, which was probably inspired by the Pontiff himself, focuses on key issues such as the codification of Canon Law, the institution of a unique Catechism for the world-wide Catholic Church, and some proposals for the reform of the Roman Curia, with particular regard to Vatican Diplomacy.
- - -

""The conflict between the secular Mexican state and the Catholic Church, which reached its heights with the Cristero war of 1926-1929, remains one of the least known chapters of Achille Ratti’s pontificate. Nevertheless, the conflict is of particular interest in an effort to identify certain underlying tendencies of Vatican politics at the time, with particular reference to the magisterium of the Pope and the Holy See’s concrete actions in defending the libertas Ecclesiae.
From an ideological standpoint, the Holy See maintains a “traditional” vision of Mexican secularism, linking it to Russian bolshevism, in accordance with a generally unitary reading of contemporary anti-Christian ideologies. The encyclical Divini Redemptoris of March 19, 1937, offers a clear testimony of how such an interpretation was largely linked to the intransigent strand of Catholic thought. This global vision – confirmed and, in some aspects, anticipated by the local Church – was, on the other hand, combined with direct actions in particular local contexts, aimed at carefully considering the peculiarities of each situation and avoiding generalizations. It is, perhaps, at this level that the more innovative aspects of the Holy See’s politics can be seen, particularly in reference to the vexata quaestio of religious freedom.
Significant to this regard is the attention paid by several clergymen – Mexican bishops, representatives of the local clergy, Vatican diplomats – to the American separation between Church and State, in substantial discontinuity with the Church’s official teaching (held until the II Vatican Council), that attributed the right to “freedom” only to the “truth”. Fifty years after the opening of the Council it is still worthwhile to enquire as to the extent to which the dramatic experiences of persecution suffered by the Church in the first half of the twentieth century, of which the Mexican question represents a substantial chapter, influenced the subsequent evolution of the Church’s teachings.
More generally, a realistic evaluation of the relationship between tradition and innovation at all levels in the ecclesiastical sphere seems to be an ever more essential requirement for a correct interpretation of the Catholic Church’s history.""
