A single page astronomical study guide of the ten Maya Grolier Codex pages.  This guide labels pages 1-9 and Carlson's reconstruction of page 10/11 based on the author's discovery that Codex pages 10 and 11 are actually two parts of the same "page 10".  One of four known ancient Maya books, the Grolier Codex depicts different manifestations of the planet Venus; the column of glyphs on the left of each panel records days in a 104-year Venus almanac. These plaster-coated bark-paper pages, carbon-dated to the 13th century, represent only half of the 20-page original.

This guide has been posted on Academia.edu as part of the Grolier Codex Project of the Center for Archaeoastronomy under the directorship of John B. Carlson, Ph.D.  The Grolier Codex Project seeks to further advance the study of the Grolier Codex.

The belief that the United States is a unique nation with a particular destiny has long been a staple of American rhetoric and this conception of American exceptionalism is often couched in religious discourse. Such discourses often highlight the American people or system of government, but the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly referred to as Mormons) provides a departure from these notions by rooting American exceptionalism in the land itself. This chapter explores how this emphasis on the American continent as a chosen land guides their views on the government, the Constitution, and the role of the church in both religious and political matters.

This comparative case study links together the scholarly discourses on religiously-motivated world-rejecting and religious activism. It provides empirical evidence for differentiation between four ideal-typed patterns of religious activism as they relate to different trajectories and spheres of religious world-denying in strongly-religious movements: Pattern I (world conquerors) targets inner-worldly sphere of activism in the particular state, using the full scope of political tools to promote its religiously-fueled ideology and theocracy. Pattern II (world transformers) creatively combines inner-worldly and other-worldly spheres of activism, applying political strategies in the most advantageous political situations and primarily focusing on strategic missionary activism in “the world.” Pattern III (world creators) utilizes dif-ferent forms of civic engagement to re-create “the righteous world” on the congregational level, but also participates in missionary activities. Finally, pattern IV (world renouncers) renounces any inner-worldly forms of political or civic engagement as sinful activity.

The potential of visual research methods in the sociology of religion is vast, but largely untapped. This comes as a surprise, however, given the visual, symbolic, and material nature of religion and spirituality. Evidence of religious faith and practice is materially present in everything from clothing and jewelry to artifacts found in people’s homes and workplaces. Not only is religion’s symbolic and material presence palpable throughout society, it also informs attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of countless people worldwide. Words-and-numbers approaches to social research, however, sometimes miss important dimensions of religion and spirituality in the contemporary world. Seeing Religion is an invitation to a visual sociology of religion. In this edited volume, I bring together contributors who draw from their current research to discuss the application of visual methods to the study of religion and spirituality. Each chapter stimulates the sociological imagination through examples of research techniques, analytical approaches, and methodological concerns.
