The expansion of cash-crop production in French West Africa (FWA) was the consequence of the end of slave trade in the French Empire in 1848 and the economic transformations linked to the Industrial Revolution. The main cash-crops developed on a regional scale were peanuts, palm-oil and kernels, karité oil and other commodities such as gum, wax, gold and hides. The transportation and telecommunications revolution (steam shipping, railways, telegraph) during the second half of the nineteenth century supported the expansion of colonial empires where commodities played a key role  in the new economic structures (Curry-Machado, 2013) [...]

In September 1895, a boldly innovative trial was begun with the teaching of Islam in a British government school in the town of Amroha, near Delhi. This article returns to the Amroha experiment to consider what it reveals about Indian Muslim exchanges with European administrators on the subject of secular colonial education. It explores the significance of Muslim-British negotiations over colonial pedagogy to the historical development of Indian secularism.

The relationship between capitalism and democracy has historically been a complicated one whose contradictions were reinforced by capitalist crises. In this context we address the following key questions: (1) how have the relationships between capital and democracy been constituted during the principal organic crises of historical capitalism? (2) How can we understand those relationships within the current deep crisis? In so doing we develop our principal hypothesis concerning the crisis of democracy today: while the crisis of Fordist capitalism in the 1970s was a crisis of too much democracy (at least from the particular perspective of capital), the crisis of neoliberalism today (from the perspective of the political economy and of society in general) is a crisis of not enough democracy. The crisis of democracy in this sense constitutes the principal impasse for sustainable exit strategies from the contemporary organic crisis.
