The aim of the course is to introduce students to the analysis of collective violence and its interaction with institutional development. The first section of the course offers a broad overview of the co-evolution of war and political institutions. The second section focuses on intra-state conflicts, taking into account explanations of their causes, how they unfold, and which agents – internal and external - play relevant role shaping their dynamics and outcomes. Section three addresses state-building in post-conflict societies, highlighting how different strategies undertaken by domestic and international political actors can contribute to the creation of successful institutions and how these, in turn, can prevent further conflict and lead to the emergence of virtuous cycles of political development.
