The aim of this book is not to provide yet another critique of capitalism but rather to contribute to the ongoing dialogue for post-capitalist construction, and to discuss how another world could be possible. It builds on the idea that peer-to-peer infrastructures are gradually becoming the general conditions of work, economy, and society, considering peer production as a social advancement within capitalism but with various post-capitalistic aspects in need of protection, enforcement, stimulation and connection with progressive social movements. Using a four-scenario approach, the authors seek to simplify possible outcomes and to explore relevant trajectories of the current techno-economic paradigm within and beyond capitalism. They postulate that the mature peer production communities pose a sustainable alternative to capital accumulation, that of the circulation of the Commons. They make some tentative transition proposals towards a Commons-based economy and society for the state, the market and the civic domain.

This work makes use of the theory and methodology of Cyber-Archaeology for the reconstruction of a
hypothetical Roman mining landscape based on two regions of Hispania which now belong to the territory of
Portugal: Trêsminas and Aljustrel. From what was observed in the field during excavations, we tried to
reconstruct an interactive environment of a mining landscape with all its key elements. For this, has been made
use of the Unity, Blender and Autodesk Maya softwares in order to model the objects and create user
interactivity within the visual environment.

Textiles are present everywhere and any time. Advances in material science and electronics have added intelligence to textiles and created “smart clothes”. The advent of smart textiles makes it possible to bring the traditional textile sector to a level of high-technological industry.
Smart textiles can sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli. Such textiles find uses in many applications ranging from military and security to personalized healthcare, hygiene and entertainment. Their close relationship with the field of computer wearable offers many diverging research directions. A part of these new materials and structures have already reached the stage of commercialization, a much larger part however is still in full development or still has to be invented even.
This article about smart textiles presents a short overview about this growing technology. Potentials, alternatives and advantages of integrating intelligent systems in smart textiles are presented.

The Payroll and HR (Human Resources) departments in organizations coordinate various functions like salary hikes, bonus payments, recruitment, benefit deductions, firing employees and vacation leaves. They also need to maintain data that is confidential in nature like employee information, home addresses, financial data and social security numbers. They need to take care that such confidential information is not accessed by unauthorized companies or individuals. The payroll and HR software is a fully integrated functionality that enables the payroll and HR department to operate, access, manage and process organization’s various payroll and HR functions. It also helps decision makers to gain a clearer insight of organization’s resources even in turbulent situations. The various modules in the software are customized depending upon the needs of organization and minimizes the amount of time spent on the administration work by the staff members.

Enterprise application integration (EAI) aims towards consolidating, modernizing and coordinating various computer applications in an enterprise. It is the combination of processes, software and hardware resulting in a seamless integration of two or more enterprise systems allowing them to operate as one. Prior to the enterprise application integration (EAI), there was lack of concept of integration for corporate data as the IT systems were built in an unplanned manner. Enterprise application integration (EAI) integrates all the technologies and services in a business to act as a middleware that enables integration of various systems and applications across any enterprise. Business software such as supply chain management applications, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, human resource management, business intelligence systems, customer relationship management (CRM), and payroll systems cannot communicate with each other to share data.

During the last few years, cloud technology has gained tremendous importance leading to the rapid growth in use of cloud technology in various industry verticals. Industries manage and rely on huge amount of data for the quality performance and services. Shared cloud model is a new trend being followed by many companies. Along with it, many government offices across the globe are spending significant amount on the adoption of these technologies. For instance, agencies and government organizations such as Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and General Service Administration (GSA) have already started investment and use of commodity cloud technology. Thus, the adoption of the community cloud technology is expected to increase in coming years. The community cloud technologies are developed with the use of cloud computing technologies. Increasing need for single regulatory and network security norm across the globe is significant factor for the growth of this market.

Informal socialization is an essential ingredient in effective faculty development, and a necessary component of successful centers for teaching and learning. There is more to assisting faculty than providing workshops, even assuming faculty retain and use the methods discussed at the workshops. Foundational learning theories apply to faculty as well as any learner, and identifying how to create sustainable relationships with faculty is a key component of successful development. Theoretical models of socialization apply partly to this context, but a new model informed by emotional intelligence is needed for authentically connecting faculty with developers.

Well-known for some years to advanced technology users, Screen Capture Software (SCS) offers the promise of recording action on the computer desktop (right down to the mouse movement and mouse clicks) together with voiceover narration, all combined into a single movie file that can be shared, emailed, or uploaded. Educause (2006) defines screencasts as the ―screen capture of the actions on a user‘s computer screen, typically (http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/ELI7012.pdf) with accompanying audio, distributed through RSS. SCS burst forth on the scene in the mid 2000s with prominent names like TechSmith‘s Camtasia ($299) and Adobe‘s Captivate ($799). These full-featured programs include every editing, mixing, and re-mastering function imaginable, and are very user-friendly. The more recent years have seen much lower-cost alternatives such as SnagIt ($49), FullShot ($49), and !Quick Screen Recorder ($29), as well as a dozen others, all of which bundle fewer services in exchange for the lower price. While maintaining the user-friendly functionality, they often restrict file output to only one or two file types, and offer minimal editing tools, or sometimes none at all.

Long utilized in European and Asian countries, fast ―next generation‖ cell phone networks and mobile data streams have only recently begun to make deep inroads in the United States, and companies are scrambling to write content, tools, and new applets (―apps‖) for these users. The iPhone has become a juggernaut in the United States, with 13 million units sold in 2008 (a 245% increase over 2007) and a further 45 million units expected in 2009 (Elmer-DeWitt, 2009). While iPhone still lags Nokia and RIM internationally, the overall trend toward mobile computing becomes firmer by the day, and it behooves educators to become familiar with the cell phone tools that are relevant for teaching in tomorrow‘s and increasingly today‘s classroom.

This paper describes specific active learning strategies for teaching computer science, integrating both instructional technologies and non-technology-based strategies shown to be effective in the literature. The theoretical learning components addressed include an intentional method to help students build metacognitive abilities, as well as improve on their self-efficacy, both inside their chosen discipline and connections to other interdisciplinary topics. The results indicate that students are very open and eager to embrace novel ways to become engaged in learning in the area of computer science.

This article presents faculty perceptions of the first month of iPad deployment in a national college system and a case study describing the integration of mobile learning devices in one college, interpreted within the framework of a SWOT analysis. We include a brief history of the implementation; description of the three-tier structure of infrastructure, pedagogy, and content; faculty perceptions; and pedagogy interview findings. We collected data using 1) case study interviews, 2) a faculty dispositional survey, and 3) iPad lead faculty. Overall, the large-scale deployment of iPad mobile learning devices was associated with high faculty engagement in formal and informal professional development activities and adoption of an active student-centered pedagogy. In addition, the program stimulated innovative approaches to technical challenges; and it spurred development and evaluation of new digital content.

Science educators recognize the potential of the Internet as an educational tool. However, little research based on educational theory and self-regulated learning has been conducted to determine how educators can maximize the learning potential of this relatively new teaching tool. One of the major aspects of this study was designed to illustrate the need for self-regulated learning when using the Internet for education. Two alternate forms of an on-line instructional web site containing the same information were developed. The first, a constructivist format provided more links for students to wander and build concepts with the material in ways that may be consistent with their particular learning style. The second is called an objectivist format and is similar to presentations found in academic settings where lectures are provided.
