Drawing on resources in the phenomenological tradition, particularly Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of the body and Levinas’s conception of alimentation, this paper develops a notion of the body as a material event whose integrity is constituted by the sensations and sensuous environments it lives from. Instead of focusing on perception as is typically done in discussions of Merleau-Ponty, I engage what I take to be his rehabilitation of the concept of sensation and read him together with Levinas’s analysis of sensibility as susceptibility, particularly in Otherwise than Being. This involves a critique of Merleau-Ponty’s conception of the body-world relation as “reversible,” in favor of a notion of the body as an integrated plastic substance composed of affective and sensory thresholds.  This idea of the plastic body considers the metabolization of sensation to be basic to the body’s composition. Since sensation is considered here to be neither natural nor artificial, it allows us to speak of metabolic activity in a non-biological sense: for instance, the metabolization of affects, materials, spaces, and sensations. Sensation, unlike perception or cognition, is a volatile concept; it evokes both enabling and disabling effects. This volatility is ethically provocative because it calls attention to the symbiotic relation which obtains between our bodies and their natural and built environments, and thereby gives us over to an ethical consideration of the sensations given off by those environments. We can thus ask: Do our built spaces enable or disable our bodies? Is the integrity of our bodies compromised by the sensations given off by our constructions? These kinds of questions need not be restricted to the human sphere, as we can readily turn them around and ask whether our built spaces threaten the integrity of the natural world. On this score, the theoretical writings of Frank Lloyd Wright are instructive. I draw from Wright’s general perspective, as well as the architectural theory of Pallasmaa, Zumthor, and Benedikt, in order to suggest that sensation—that is, the aesthetic life of the body—forms the basis of the intercorporeal community and that the proliferation and preservation of diverse sensuous spaces is imperative  to the integrity of this community.

In an American society both increasingly diverse and increasingly segregated, the signals children receive about race are more confusing than ever. In this context, how do children negotiate and make meaning of multiple and conflicting messages in order to develop their own ideas about race? Learning Race, Learning Place engages this question using in-depth interviews with an economically diverse group of African American children and their mothers in Detroit, Michigan. Through these rich narratives, Erin N. Winkler seeks to reorient the way we look at how children develop their ideas about race, showing the importance of considering this process from children’s points of view and listening to their interpretations of their experiences, which are often quite different than what the adults around them expect or intend. At the children’s prompting, Winkler examines the roles of multiple actors and influences, including gender, skin tone, colorblind rhetoric, peers, family, media, and school, and especially place. Winkler brings to the fore the complex and understudied power of place, positing that, while children’s racial identities and experiences with racism are shaped by a national construction of race, they are also specific to each particular place, which exerts both direct and indirect influence on children’s racial identities and ideas.

"The Youth Travel Accommodation Industry Survey Volume 7 is the latest report on youth travel accommodation trends launched by STAY (Safe Travel Accommodation for Youth) WYSE Association, the global trade body for the youth travel accommodation sector.

The seventh industry report is based on a survey of 2,231 youth travel accommodation operations across 100 countries and includes findings across all aspects affecting the industry, from the average size and rates of properties to the social media habits and booking styles of their guests.

The businesses polled for the survey, conducted between May and October 2013, accounted for 136,899 beds. 62% of these properties were located in urban areas and 60% of respondents were hostels.

Our 2013 survey incorporated some considerable changes compared to the previous versions; questions were, especially on finances, and new questions were added on pressing issues surrounding third party website bookings, third party website contracts and licensing issues.
