One World Trade Center (also known as 1 World Trade Center, One WTC and 1 WTC; the current building was dubbed the "Freedom Tower" during initial basework) refers to the main building of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere, and the fourth-tallest in the world. The 104-story supertall structure shares a numeric name with the northern Twin Tower of the original World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The new skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. The building is bordered by West Street to the west, Vesey Street to the north, Fulton Street to the south, and Washington Street to the east.

Construction of below-ground utility relocations, footings, and foundations for the new building began on April 27, 2006. On March 30, 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the building would be officially known by its legal name of "One World Trade Center", rather than its colloquial name of "Freedom Tower".The building is 104 standard floors high, but the tower only has 94 actual stories.

One World Trade Center became the tallest structure in New York City on April 30, 2012, when it surpassed the height of the Empire State Building. The tower's steel structure was topped out on August 30, 2012. On May 10, 2013, the final component of the skyscraper's spire was installed, making the building reach a symbolic height of 1,776 feet (541 m). Its imperial height measurement is a reference to the year when the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The building opened on November 3, 2014. The new World Trade Center complex will initially comprise three other high-rise office buildings, which will be built along Greenwich Street, and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located just south of One World Trade Center, where the original Twin Towers stood. The construction of the new building is part of an effort to memorialize and rebuild following the destruction of the original World Trade Center complex

The small islands of the Windward Islands have been immersed in the international economy since the development of sugar plantations in the late seventeenth century.  For most of this history, large plantations dominated the economy and international trade with sugar production as the major source of foreign exchange into the mid-twentieth century.  Since World War II, the developing banana export industry was lead by the emergence of a small farmer sector.  Due in part to the preferential agreements between Britain and its former Caribbean colonies that guaranteed market access by reserving 30 percent of import licenses for Windward Island bananas, the small farm sector flourished.  The economic and political importance of this development cannot be exaggerated for the West Indian economies.  The protections afforded by the Lomé agreement have given these small island economies the economic stability and access to markets that have played a major role in their economic development and liberal political systems.  Today, however, the structure of this banana regime is being challenged in the WTO (World Trade Organization) at the behest of the United States and the larger banana producers of Central and South America.  The historic meaning of the WTO decision regarding preferential treatment under Lomé is that St. Lucia will be “reinserted” yet again into the global economy under new and more competitive market conditions.

The rebalancing of global demand towards large emerging countries and the resulting long-lasting cycle of high international commodity prices had a profound impact on LDC trade.  LDCs remain particularly vulnerable to external shocks; the 2008-2009 global crisis and the bumpy  ransitional recovery that followed illustrate the fragility of the recent trends.  In such a perspective, renewed efforts towards extensive product diversification are called for. Fostering diversification has been supported for many years by preferential market access to develop and --more recently-- to emerging countries. But preferences alone are not sufficient to improve the supply-side capabilities of most LDCs. The new business models related to global value chains offer new opportunities to LDCs for export diversification and trade facilitation is one of the key components of this diversification strategy.

The paper will begin with a brief discussion of the concept of ‘coherence’, before applying it to the EU’s representation in the WTO's Dispute Settlement Mechanism (DSM). Here the consideration of the EU’s representation in the DSM has been divided into three parts: the technical-procedural unity of the EU’s representation; its coherence with the internal policies of the EU, such as the CAP, environmental policy and development; and its coherence with the rest of the EU’s external action in the DSM. The paper will conclude with an analysis of the recent dispute brought against the EU by Denmark on behalf of the Faroe Islands.

The paper examines the rules and the practice of the World Trade Organization legal system in the field of digital trade and compares them to the ones of some non commercial international organizations in order to identify some peculiarities of the WTO context. It concludes that, although the WTO member States have not adopted specific rules for the digital environment, they somehow succeeded in applying to it the more general GATT and GATS rules which, in turn, have influenced the material content of some preferential trade agreements (PTAs) relating to trade in digital goods and services, thus avoiding the birth of an e-spaghetti bowl. On this point only the TRIPs system registers a peculiar phase of backwardness.

The comment discusses the notion of "trade-related" aspects of IP rights, describing its birth in WTO law and its transplant into EU law - albeit as "commercial" aspects of IP rights. It discusses the ECJ's difficulty of defining the notion in Daiichi Sankyo and exposes the problems entailed in this vague notion: namely that a term that arguably was coined to create consent in the WTO without actually having any precise meaning suddenly became the basis of an EU competence.

The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) pushes for the continuous liberalization of education all over the world. This agreement is directly affecting the education regulatory framework of the WTO member states as well as the geographies of decision-making in education affairs. However, the GATS is being widely contested by the education community. Teachers unions and other education stakeholders have opposed and campaigned against the GATS in different countries and at a range of geographical scales, from the local to the global.
This paper explores how non-state actors, their ideas and strategic action, are key elements to understanding the outcomes of the global liberalization process entailed by the GATS. Specifically, it shows how the scalar interaction between civil society networks and the organization of the struggle at different scales is a key impact factor for non-state actors in global politics. At the same time, civil society organizations’ reflexivity on the re-scaling of politics and on the new challenges re- scaling means in terms of strategy and political opportunities are also relevant factors of political success.
The arguments of the article are based on an in-depth case study over Education International, the biggest international federation of teacher unions, and its campaign against the GATS.

Anyone reading modern day trade agreements would not be surprised to discover that they focus less and less on reducing import duties, and more on developing national industries, promoting exports, and ensuring domestic policy space. Their true purpose, a position of middle-of-the-road protectionism, is concealed under vague terms such as ‘freer, fair trade’, ‘gradual liberalization,’ ‘reciprocal concessions,’ or ‘development packages.’ However, the benefits of international trade do not lie in moderation and degree of reciprocity. True free trade is a policy of no trade barriers, to be pursued unilaterally by each and every country. If markets were released from the heavy hand of governments, international free trade would follow at one stroke.
