We suggest that the most parsimonious explanation for the material, linguistic, biological, mythological, nautical, chronological, and physical anthropological evidence summarized in chapters 1–13 is that Polynesians made pre-Columbian landfalls in the New World. Further, based on this evidence, we identify three likely locations of contact: southern Chile, the Gulf of Guayaquil in South America, and the Santa Barbara Channel in North America. All of these contacts we argue occurred during the late Holocene between approximately cal A.D. 700 and 1350. None of them altered the course of prehistory in these regions in the extreme ways suggested by hyperdiffusionists (i.e., they did not cause the emergence of New World civilizations); nonetheless, local populations in both Polynesia and the Americas were the recipients of new technologies and domesticates that affected their subsistence practices and lives. Cultures changed.

"This thesis will analyze the U.S. military’s wartime use of Ulithi, a Pacific atoll in what is now known as the Federated States of Micronesia, which served as one of the largest military bases during the Second World War. The atoll, occupied in the final days of September 1944, was quickly established as the Allies’ forward base of operations, and was used to stage large operations against Japanese islands such as Leyte and Okinawa. In addition to Ulithi’ s lagoon, five of the atoll’s islands were utilized for various military operations, while the lagoon served as an anchorage and re-supply and repair harbor, saving ships thousands of miles and precious days of transit time. The lagoon itself, one of the largest natural anchorages in the world, could hold over seven hundred ships simultaneously, including the navy’s largest aircraft carriers and battleships. With so many berths, the Navy’s Service Squadron Ten was able to use the lagoon for large repair and re-supply operations without ever building a single warehouse or repair facility on land.

This thesis is concerned with two facets of the operation at Ulithi. The first is the operational aspects of the atoll. As such, this thesis will examine the construction and use of the various islands in the larger construct of the Allied military operations in the Pacific Theater of WWII. This study will examine the occupied islands and offer an analysis of the functional use of each. The second aspect of Ulithi that this thesis will study is the human condition of the men who worked on one of the atoll’s islands or in the lagoon. The narrative will provide the reader with specific examples and analyses of daily life on the atoll as men worked to prepare various battle fleets for combat in the Pacific Theater of the war. Additionally, this study will examine the memories of those who stopped at Mogmog, the fleet’s recreation island, on their way to and from combat zones in the Pacific in order to assess its impact on morale."

Commensal models, which can be used to infer prehistoric human mobility, have been designed and applied to understand migration and interaction in the Pacific (Matisoo-Smith 1994, 1996). This chapter describes the elements of successful commensal models and examines how these models may pertain to finding evidence for prehistoric contact between Polynesia and the Americas. Setting out individual components will aid in the identification of new candidate organisms and the collection of data sets appropriate for testing hypotheses of contact between Polynesia and the Americas. In examining the development and utility of commensal models we will focus the bulk of our discussion on those plants, animals, and viruses that have either been identified as evidence for contact or have the potential to in the future. This chapter will serve to clarify the current state of knowledge regarding organisms with real potential for prehistoric transference between Polynesia and the Americas as well as providing the means by which others may be reasonably excluded.

Recent ethnographically informed research has begun to counter the traditional “Great Men” histories and overly simplified narratives of colonial expansion that have dominated studies of early European – Polynesian cross-cultural encounters. Yet the sub-cultural divisions of the European side of the early encounters are yet to be fully explored. Important social and cultural divisions separated ships’ officers and scientists from the seamen and marines with whom they traveled. While these divisions have been recognized for some time by maritime historians, there has been little assessment of their implications for understanding early European - Polynesian encounters. Officers and common sailors perceived different opportunities in their interaction with Polynesians, and attempted to shape their encounters with native populations in different ways. Evidence of this differentiated experience is to be found in the journals of European captains, from Bougainville to Bligh. They reveal the officers’ concerns with their crews’ enculturation and their attempts to control the men’s exchanges with the islanders. Effectively, the early contact period witnessed the evolution of a new social group with a distinctive sub-culture: seamen of the South Pacific. First contacts in the Pacific cannot be fully understood without recognizing the social heterogeneity of the European crews, and the importance of a new group of boundary crossers: men whose place was neither fully in the European nor the Polynesian world.

The origin of the Polynesian bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), an important crop species in prehistoric Polynesia, has remained elusive. Most recently, a South American origin has been favored as the bottle gourd could have been introduced from this continent with the sweet potato by Polynesian voyagers around A.D. 1,000. To test the hypothesis of an American origin for the Polynesian bottle gourd, we developed seven markers specific to bottle gourd (two chloroplast and five nuclear). The nuclear markers were developed using a new technique where polymorphic inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers are converted into single-locus polymerase chain reaction and sequencing markers—an approach that will be useful for developing markers in other taxa. All seven markers were sequenced in 36 cultivars of bottle gourd from Asia, the Americas, and Polynesia. The results support a dual origin for the Polynesian bottle gourd: the chloroplast markers are exclusively of Asian origin, but the nuclear markers show alleles originating in both the Americas and Asia. Because hybridization of Polynesian bottle gourds with post-European introductions cannot be excluded, ancient DNA from archaeological material will be useful for further elucidating the prehistoric movements of this species in Polynesia. This work has implications not only for the dispersal of the Polynesian bottle gourd but also for the domestication and dispersal of the species as a whole.

Russia’s first circumnavigators, whose expeditions to supply the Russian American Company in Alaska spanned the first decades of the nineteenth century, took much inspiration from British naval technique. Many Russian officers either trained in the Royal Navy or served with Russians who had done so. This paper will assess the links between British and Russian navigation techniques in light of these connections. I will consider the role, c. 1770-1830, of British navigational theory and practice in Russia, Russian trials and deployments of British instruments and chronometers, and Russian involvement in efforts to secure a reliable method of finding the longitude. I highlight the interdependence of the social and material culture of navigation. Russians placed great value on the measurements of British navigators, so that British and Russian instruments and reputations were calibrated together.

Components of the Pacific transported landscape have been used as proxies to trace the prehistoric movement of humans across the Pacific for almost two decades. Analyses of archaeological remains and DNA sequences of plants, animals, and microorganisms moved by or with humans have contributed to understanding prehistoric migration, trade, exchange, and sometimes revealed the geographic origins of particular plants and animals. This paper presents the basic elements of a DNA-based commensal model and discusses the phylogenetic and population genetic approaches these models employ. A clear delineation of the underlying assumptions of these models and the background information required to construct them have yet to appear in the literature. This not only provides a framework with which to construct a commensal model but also highlights gaps in current knowledge. The ways in which commensal models have enriched archaeological reconstructions will be highlighted, as will their current limitations. With these limitations in mind, options will be outlined for augmenting commensal models through the application of established techniques and new technologies in order to provide the best tools for reconstructing ancient human mobility and behavior in the Pacific and beyond.

"Abstract

The sugar crisis of 1860 in Reunion motivated the migration of thousands of Réunionnais to New Caledonia. Along with sugar planters, wealthy enough to transport their production equipment as well as their indentured workers, significant groups of both skilled and unskilled labourers made their way from Reunion to the Pacific colony in the second half of the nineteenth century. In previous publications, I have focused my attention on the sugar industry and the immigration of the rich planters and their coolies. While I have drawn attention to the heterogeneity of the sugar workers and have signalled the arrival and numeric importance of tradespeople, manual and low skilled workers from Reunion, I have not yet described these immigrants in detail. This is because this group has been largely ignored by history and details surrounding their circumstances are scant. In this paper, I discuss the background and origins of these people and highlight some of the fascinating stories to emerge from this migration to New Caledonia and beyond.
