The main purpose of this article is to analyze the major flooding
that occurred in the municipality of Rio do Sul situated in the Valley of the Itajaí-Açu River, in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The process of human occupation of the region can be considered as one of the great responsible for the recurrence of urban flooding. It will be discussed the most significant
floods that affected the population causing reversible and irreversible material, symbolic and even emotional damages. Decisions adopted as public policy in order to contain or minimize new occurrences also deserved a review. And
finally through this review an effort was made to fill the gaps left by following researches dealing mainly with the cities located in the Medium and Low Valley of the Itajaí-Açú River.

In Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase: Contemporary North American Dystopian Literature, (Gisele Baxter, Brett Josef Grubisc and Tara Lee, eds.), Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2014, 373-392
What do literary dystopias reflect about the times? In Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase, contributors address this amorphous but pervasive genre, using diverse critical methodologies to examine how North America is conveyed or portrayed in a perceived age of crisis, accelerated uncertainty, and political volatility.
Drawing from contemporary novels such as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, and the work of Margaret Atwood and William Gibson (to name a few), this book examines dystopian literature produced by North American authors between the signing of NAFTA (1994) and the tenth anniversary of 9/11 (2011). As the texts illustrate, awareness of and deep concern about perceived vulnerabilities—ends of water, oil, food, capitalism, empires, stable climates, ways of life, non-human species, and entire human civilizations—have become central to public discourseover the same period.
By asking questions such as “What are the distinctive qualities of post-NAFTA North American dystopian literature?” and “What does this literature reflect about the tensions and contradictions of the inchoate continental community of North America?” Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase serves to resituate dystopian writing within a particular geo-social setting and introduce a productive means to understand both North American dystopian writing and its relevant engagements with a restricted, mapped reality.

From the end of the Second World War until 1991 the United States and USSR were engaged in a war of ideology that spanned the globe. For the USA it was a national security priority that Latin America should not fall under a communist shadow, and so they engaged in a wide range of activities designed to keep the region under the US sphere of influence. This paper aims to briefly analyse the key features of US foreign policy in Latin America during the Cold War.

A cross-disciplinary analysis of texts from two moments in Spanish writing about Mexican mission between the mid-sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century. The analysis identifies a change in worldviews between these two moments and attempts to explain this change through a move from a model of vision to a model of touch.

The 1908 Young Turk Revolution, which restored constitutional rule to the Ottoman Empire, had an indelible and immediate impact on the Syrian émigré communities in the Americas. These subjects of the Sultan produced an outpouring of public support for political transformations in cities and towns from New York to Buenos Aires, renting esteemed venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Casa Suiza. Yet, while much of the encouragement embraced the potential for reform in the old country, many Syrian Ottomans used the political opening in Constantinople to affirm their place in local societies as productive members.

The transition from an energy regime based on biomass and animal muscle to another based on fossil fuels is an epochal transformation whose importance is arguably on a par with the Neolithic transition from hunter and gathering to agriculture as the basis of human existence. Like societies elsewhere, inhabitants of central Mexico relied throughout their history on the sun’s energy locked up in plants and animals for their livelihood. This fundamental socioenvironmental arrangement, what historian Fernand Braudel called the “biological ancien régime,” persisted in Mexico until the late nineteenth century, when the limits of the old energy regime began to be overcome through the simultaneous expansion in the use of organic energy sources such as wood, charcoal, and hydropower; the adoption of the steam engine, and the increasing use of fossil fuels. This chapter traces the basic patterns of the old energy regime in the basin of Mexico since the arrival of human beings to the nineteenth century and establishes a biophysical baseline for the region in the middle of the nineteenth century, exploring the limits and possibilities inherent to an economy based on biomass as well as human and animal muscle.
