"I have a road to forge to show my Tenure and Promotion Committee the value and contribution of modern academic librarians, and Academia.edu's analytics are instrumental in that effort. My Academia.edu analytics are extremely helpful to paint a very clear picture of what it is that I do, how my research impacts people, and that people are looking for my research, just like any other traditional faculty member on campus"
Kaetrena Davis Kendrick, University of South Carolina-Lancaster
"I highly recommend to all of the junior faculty I mentor to not only put up their Academia.edu profile, but to use these analytics–just print up the actual pages–and include them as supporting evidence in their tenure application."
Brenda LeFrancois, Memorial University
"A lot of academic exchange is about reputation, and the more visible you are, the higher your reputation is, and the higher your reputation is, the easier it gets for you to get grant money. When I become the Head of the department, I will launch a concerted effort to get other people to join Academia.edu because I really believe in the site. If we could all join and upload all of our papers from our department, then it would definitely increase our visibility as a department, and I'm sure that will make a difference."
Michael Hauskeller, University of Exeter
"The more evidence that I demonstrate of impact, the more likely it is that the tenure promotion committee will realize the different ways in which impact can be shown. Academia.edu's analytics prove to some of our committee members that what they help fund–the work we produce from such funding–actually gets looked for, read, printed, etc. One can glean from Academia.edu's analytics new ways of conceptualizing research impact."
Tim Ritchie, University of Limerick

"With Web of Science you only learn how many people have quoted what. But with Academia.edu I can see what is viewed, what is actually read or not. Here I learn something additional, something I would not know otherwise."
Hans Von Storch, University of Hamburg
"There are many indexes of impact, and I believe that in the future Academia.edu might become an official index showing readership. These analytics could be a sign for Department Chairs, for example, when deciding to employ someone or not. Academia.edu is like proof of your level of knowledge it creates a source of trust, proof that your papers are really published somewhere and that people have read them."
Nihat Celik, Kersity of Hamburg
"Academia.edu connects you to the demand of the field."
Andreas Demetrious, University of Nicosia
"Because PhD students and post-docs are at an early stage in their research, being on Academia.edu can shape their career in a much better way. For example, depending on the number of hits an article receives, they can decide to start working on something that is of more interest or has more application."
Shivendra Tewari, Medical College of Wisconsin
"The overall number of document views is quite useful because it's that immediate feedback that we typically lack in the academic world."
Vlad Glaveanu, Aalborg University
"Between my analytics and what I see popping up in my news feed, I get a better sense of what keywords to use. I can come up with my five keywords for any article, but that doesn't mean those are the keywords people are going to search on."
Reynol Junco, Harvard University
"If I go to my document views and I see that one of my papers has 1,000 hits, for example, then I know that I'm actually doing something right and it is something I should continue working on because there's an interest out there. So if I plan to write a follow-up piece, then I will look at these analytics and choose a topic that is generating interest."
Sascha-Dominik Bachmann, University of Lincoln
citations
"Academia.edu is an early way to say, Look, I'm citing you! Once people see that you've cited them, they are more inclined to give you credit and cite you back."
Max Abrahms, Johns Hopkins University
"I uploaded my first research article on Academia.edu and then I found that a lot of people started sharing my research–people were reading my research and my citations tremendously increased!" says Pramod with big eyes and an infectious smile. "Now many people are citing my papers–I have around 20 citations already. This is the thing I really wanted to share, because Academia.edu actually gave me this amazing citation of my research. Before joining Academia.edu I couldn't get a single citation!"
Pramod Kumar, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research
By sharing his code and models on Academia.edu, computational biologist Shivendra Tewari is not only advancing science; he also receives a citation each time his code is picked up and used in someone else's model.
Shivendra Tewari, Medical College of Wisconsin

"I think it's really important to connect the dots between what's happening in the world of professional bioethics and the world of the New York Times, and the BBC, and the Daily Mail, and so on. If these sorts of arguments can trickle down into the news media, then that's when it starts to have an effect on the culture."
Brian Earp, University of Oxford

"Truly international and truly interdisciplinary, Academia.edu has been a uniquely impactful tool in my professional life."
Donald Russell Bailey, Providence College
"This international exchange of scholarship has opened up channels of communication that I might not have enjoyed otherwise. Academia.edu helps to establish and maintain the exchange before and after my field work."
Arthur Urbano, Providence College
"Academia.edu has given me access to people of multiple levels of shared interest, access to people that I wouldn't otherwise have contact with. There really haven't been any other resources available to do that."
Kiven Strohm, University of Montreal
"I think anyone in a small field and not involved with the major research groups will find Academia more useful than those who have colleagues at the same institution involved in similar work. You can create your own virtual research community. I've connected with the main other person involved in similar research on here. It's good to be able to discuss the issues with a fellow academic sometimes."
John Rumbold, Keele University
