""The transition from Early/Middle (Starčevo) to Late Neolithic (Vinča) is an issue that has been neglected in the Serbian archaeology since the middle 80's. This problem is, however, of crucial importance for understanding of the processes that lead to the introduction of Late Neolithic lifestyle in the Central Balkans. So far, two possible scenarios were more or less examined: Vinča emerged as a result of "evolution" from Starčevo; or, so-called Starčevo and Vinča cultures were separate, but simultaneously existing communities, although their relations and possible interactions have never been fully elaborated.
Rescue excavations conducted in 2011 at the site of Pavlovac - Čukar, near Vranje in southern Serbia, revealed new evidence about Early/Middle - Late Neolithic transition. The main characteristics of the archaeological material found at the site are: the presence of mixed Early and Late Neolithic pottery in the same layers; hybridization of Early and Late Neolithic features (fabric, forming and ornamental techniques and design execution on ceramic objects); and finally, frequent presence of roughly finishing, suggesting careless manufacture or lack of experience.
The examination of the ceramic objects leads to considerations related to different aspects of identity: mixing and hybridization in material culture may imply mixing of people; careless finishing of objects may suggest the presence of unexeperienced novices in the craft or newcomers unaware of local traditions; the variability of ornamental techniques and design motifs may imply lack of social pressure in learning frameworks, suggesting shift in the relations between teachers and apprentices. Evidence, therefore, strongly supports the second scenario. Consequently, in the interpretation of Early/Middle - Late Neolithic transition process we must consider the possibility that the spatial and social boundaries between Starčevo and Vinča communities collapsed and a new, shared group identity emerged.

"The site near Dobkowice (Lower Silesia) was discovered by accident in 1971. Archaeological excavations
carried out in 1972 and 1979 to 1981 have revealed 16 features; among them various kinds of pits, the remains of
a ditch, and 4 burials related to the Jordanów culture. In 2012, interdisciplinary investigations were performed on site.
The main research goals were the confirmation of the existence of an enclosure, a re-evaluation of the absolute chronology
of the site (by radiocarbon dating) and obtaining sample material for laboratory analyses: archaeobotanical,
geoarchaeological (e.g. soil/sediment micromorphology) and osteological. In order to ensure a solid research framework
a three-step procedure has been adopted: 1) geophysical prospection with a magnetometer, which revealed a number of
anomalies indicating the presence of archaeological features, including a double ditched enclosure; 2) excavations in
designated areas, which confirmed the presence of ditches and their chronological association with the Jordanów culture;
revealed a burial in one of the ditch sections and enabled the collection of sample material; 3) laboratory analyses
(currently in progress): archaeobotanical, geoarchaeological, osteological, DNA and stable isotope analyses of the
discovered human remains and radiocarbon dating. Such an approach to site investigation permits the examination of
the archaeological record (also on the microscopic scale) and acquisition of new data, while doing limited damage to
the archaeological substance. The chosen analytical techniques will hopefully deliver new information, which will enable
a better understanding of chronology, land use patterns, and the function of enclosures in Neolithic Lower Silesia. The
aim of this paper is to present this procedure "in action" and discuss the preliminary research results."

"We examine bone samples of known domesticates (sheep, goat, cattle and pig) from five open-air village sites spanning most of the Neolithic period in Dalmatia, Croatia (cal 6000–4700 BC) to characterise diets of domestic animals and address questions of the origin and development of animal husbandry strategies in early farming communities. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values are analysed as proxies of diet and local environment that may indicate differences in herding and management practices between domesticated species. Results are compared to those reported for faunal remains found at other Neolithic sites from coastal Croatia and the wider Adriatic region. We find that isotopic values remain stable for cattle and ovicaprids during most of the Neolithic, suggesting that husbandry of these species remained fundamentally the same throughout the period in much of the Adriatic. However, temporal differences identified among pigs indicate changes in associated management practices through time, and may be a result of different foddering practices.

Tools from osseous materials were used for a variety of tasks during prehistoric times – for processing organic materials such as leather, hide, plant fibres; but they may have been also used for the manufacture of flint tools, as percussors, hammers, retouching tools, or anvils. These are relatively easily identifiable through characteristic use wear traces and numerous examples of them were noted on sites throughout Europe, covering the span from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Late Neolithic / Chalcolithic. These tools are important not only in reconstructing the chaîne opératoire for flint tools, but also for linking together different industries into general technology studies. In this paper, tools connected with flint manufacture identified so far in the Starčevo culture bone industry will be presented. These were mainly used as retouching tools or pressure flakers, and all of them were made from antler. They cover the span from ad hoc, expedient, to the carefully shaped tools.
