This paper uses Ernest Hemingway’s non-fiction text, Death in the Afternoon, to supplement and to explain Hemingway’s conception of courage and the risk of violent death. Even more clearly than in his fiction writings, Hemingway’s book outlines a “way of seeing” that allows those who have experienced violent death in war a chance to revisit and rethink their experience in the relative safety and spectatorial distance offered by peace. Despite its ill-suited reputation as a blood-thirsty book, the book’s point of departure is the very humane concern for the suffering of the horses in the ring. How this suffering can be justified by seeing the bullfight as a religious ritual with a tightly-structured presentation of events is the main question of the bullfight. The value of Hemingway’s answer lies not only in his ability to challenge and modify the viewer’s ethical stance regarding animals and humans, entertainment and culture, but also because he proposes a method by which courage, death, humanity and other core concepts can be intelligently understood.

Robert Talisse objects that Deweyan democrats, or those who endorse John Dewey’s philosophy of democracy, cannot consistently hold that (i) “democracy is a way of life” and (ii) democracy as a way of life is compatible with pluralism, at least as contemporary political theorists define that term. What Talisse refers to as his “pluralist objection” states that Deweyan democracy resembles a thick theory of democracy, that is, a theory establishing a set of prior restraints on the values that can count as legitimate within a democratic community. In this paper, it is argued that his pluralist objection succumbs to some combination of four charges. The first two sections of the paper are devoted to presentations of Talisse’s two formulations of his pluralist objection, as they appear in his essay “Can Democracy be a Way of Life?” and his book A Pragmatist Philosophy of Democracy, respectively. The four charges against the pluralist objection receive attention in the second section. In the third section, Dewey’s pluralist procedure is articulated and illustrated using a recent Canadian public policy debate, followed by some concluding remarks on the acceptability of relying on contemporary political examples of Deweyan democracy in action.

Employing the social and political ontology of Iris Marion Young, this paper evaluates the claim as to whether or not fat people are subject
to oppression on the basis of their weight. It establishes clear criteria for what constitutes oppression (exploitation, marginalization,
powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence), as well as a compelling epistemological argument for the need to evaluate claims of social justice at the level of social groups. Based on an evaluation of the evidence, it can be concluded that fat people are subject to the
systematic forms of oppression Young describes.

Karl Marx's classic definitions of class and society under capitalism are still widely used today. Ideas such as class, revolution, production and oppression are employed across a broad range of academic subjects, reaching beyond politics, economics and sociology.Yet these concepts, within a specifically Marxist framework, are not always easy to understand. This book is an ideal student introduction that explains, in clear and concise chapters, the precise meaning and implications of each of Marx's key concepts. Furthermore, the contributors show how these ideas continue to be relevant, and how they relate to modern society. The contributors include leading academics in the field of politicial science. Outlining clearly what each concept means, they move on to situate it within cutting-edge contemporary political theory.Concepts include historical materialism, capitalism, class, the state, imperialism, the division of labour, oppression, production and reproduction, revolution, working class internationalism, equality and democracy.

In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of CODESRIA, an institution from the Global South devoted to taking responsibility for the production of social science knowledge, this article explores what it means to pursue such a task under the threat of colonial imposition at methodological and disciplinary levels, which, the author argues, carries dangers of disciplinary decadence marked by the fetishisation of method. The author offers alternatives through what he calls ‘a teleological suspension of disciplinarity, and raises the question not only of the decolonisation of knowledge but also norms.
