"Not all memories are equally welcome in awareness.
People limit the time they spend thinking about unpleasant
experiences, a process that begins during encoding,
but that continues when cues later remind someone of
the memory. Here, we review the emerging behavioural
and neuroimaging evidence that suppressing awareness
of an unwelcome memory, at encoding or retrieval, is
achieved by inhibitory control processes mediated by
the lateral prefrontal cortex. These mechanisms interact
with neural structures that represent experiences in
memory, disrupting traces that support retention. Thus,
mechanisms engaged to regulate momentary awareness
introduce lasting biases in which experiences remain
accessible. We argue that theories of forgetting
that neglect the motivated control of awareness omit a
powerful force shaping the retention of our past."

""This conference will seek to explore the migration of French Protestants, principally caused by the violence and repression that followed the Reformation, and will focus on two complementary sets of questions. First of all, what were the networks whereby familial, religious, scholarly and commercial contacts were maintained, and how did they operate?
Secondly, what impact did the presence of individuals and communities belonging to such networks have on international and internal politics, and on the finance, law, trade, military and scientific development, literature, art and architecture, of their host countries? How did their presence affect views of alien societies and influence public opinion and education? Among subsidiary themes for consideration are: the challenges of communication over long distances, across national boundaries and in shifting international contexts; the effects of transnational ties, both before and after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes; whether intelligence from, and lobbying by, Huguenot immigrants made any difference to the decisions of national governments; whether observation of hitherto unknown religious, intellectual, cultural, and artisanal practices modified native thought and habits; the extent of Huguenot engagement with persons or groups of other confessions. It might be interesting to reflect on the consequences in France of having so many French-born and French-speaking communities established in other countries.
The organisers welcome participation not only from researchers primarily interested in the Huguenots, but from those whose normal concern is the politics and society of France and of the countries which received the refugees."""

"""""By the systematic use of the decrees of the Roman Holy Office, the article aims to show the way in which deported groups of morisco refugees flee to the Italian mainland – a special attention is turned to the Pontifical States – and to shed light the position of the Holy See with regards to this matter. The linked problems to their presence, passage or settlement in the peninsula are related to arguments of faith and warrant the care of the Inquisition. So that, finally, the essay shows how Holy Office behave towards them.
