This book Politics, Governance and Development in Africa is fascinating in many ways. It is based on African case studies. Many of the case studies are recent. It is based on field research and many of contributors are experienced research and scholars from across the globe. Many development partners are increasingly calling for good politics, guided by democratic principles. Countries which have good and smooth transition in Africa such as Botswana, Ghana, South Africa and Zambia also tend to make great strides in development. Good governance is obtained under efficient, accountable and transparent structures and institutions. Readers will be fascinated with this book Politics, Governance and Development in Africa because it covers new ground in the understanding of politics and governance dynamics and how they affect development in Africa. There is a recent realization that many of the development challenges in Africa would be a thing of the past if politics were managed properly. On the other hand, we need proper governance structures and institutions in order to manage public affairs efficiently and in more transparent and accountable manner. The arguments advanced in this book is that Africa needs good, positive and development politics and not grandstanding and antagonistic politics played out along ethnic or religious lines. What is missing in many studies is the linkage between politics and governance, which this books has done through myriad of articles presented here. Readers will be excited to read about examples from many parts of the world, with a call for fair politics and good structures and institutions of governance. This book is a useful addition to knowledge on politics and governance in Africa and is useful for all libraries where learners are studying Africa, and for all students and scholars who study Africa. It is relevant for humanities, arts and social sciences.

The research discussed in this paper was prompted by the writer’s interest in the roles of England’s small country (“market”) towns. It has two aims: first, to discover the extent to which the work programmes announced in the British government’s Rural White Paper of 2000 are recognised by town clerks, and second, to find out what town councils are doing, either on their own, or with others, and then to gauge the potential and desire they have for a greater degree of autonomy. In both cases the data were gathered from an online questionnaire sent to town clerks.

This background paper of the “Plan Nord Forum: The North Matters”, held in Québec City in May 2012, was published when the new government of Québec announced, upon taking power, its intention to conduct an extensive review of the Plan Nord.
Nonetheless, the government has declared that it wishes to continue to develop the North; it seems relevant to us to publish this report, using presentations made during the Plan Nord
Forum, and present a large number of findings on the potential risks of the Plan Nord as imagined and implemented by the previous Liberal government. This background paper also proposes several possible solutions, which deserve consideration from the new government that want to redefines its northern development priorities.

Based on ethnographic work on police-linked death squads and with black women's organizations, this article analyzes current urban governance policies and the spatial politics of resistance embraced by communities under siege in Brazil. Space matters not only in terms of defining one's access to the polis, but also as a deadly tool through which police killings, economic marginalization, and mass incarceration produce the very geographies (here referred to as “the black necropolis”) that the state aims to counteract in its war against the black urban poor. Yet, within the context of necropolitical governance, blackness appears as a spatially grounded praxis that enables victims of state terror to reclaim their placeless location as a political resource for redefining themselves and the polis.
