The first railroads in New York State (the Mohawk and Hudson, Saratoga and Schenectady, and Troy and Rensselaer), built between 1830 and 1835,  happened to coincide with the major routes taken by tourists. Early railroads, this chapter demonstrates, were useless for freight and were targeted almost solely to fast-moving, heavy-spending travellers such as tourists. The successes of these first railroads were profoundly influential in helping create the first railroad boom of the early 1830s, and the personnel involved in them would go on to play enormously influential roles in the railroad world of the antebellum era.

This is a chapter in Marc Gigase, Cédric Humair, Laurent Tissot, eds., _Le tourisme comme facteur de transformations économiques, techniques et sociales (XIXe-XXe siècles) - Tourism as a Factor of Economic, Technical and Social Transformations (XIXth-XXth centuries)_,  Lausanne, Switzerland: Editions Alphil, 2014.

Tourists have been labelled, metaphorically, in multiple ways. This includes descriptions of tourists as (secular) pilgrims in a quest of authenticity but also as travellers on a sacred journey. In contrast, the stereotypical image that tourists are hedonists is related particularly (but not exclusively) with sun, sand and sex, and is associated with, sometimes unbridled, consumerism (cf. Salazar 2010a). This research probe deals with the question whether a tourist is a ‘secular pilgrim’ or a ‘hedonist in search of pleasure’. Both descriptors refer to a debate among tourism scholars that started back in the 1970s. It is important to put the question and possible answers to it within the historical context of this discussion.

The Sri Lankan state’s power to narrate the war and characterize the enemy is an expression of “triumphalist nationalism” and is a selective remembering of war. Based on photographs taken during several field visits to these sites by both authors between December 2012 and January 2014, we analyze the relationship of war and tourism and how a particular Sinhala nationalist remembering of the war and landscape of memory are being constructed in post-war Sri Lanka. Today, Sri Lanka is a former war zone where the Government’s troops defeated the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE or Tamil Tigers) and ended 26 years of violent conflict in May 2009.

The end of the war came at a huge cost to civilian life in the northern part of the country; the UN estimates that over 40,000 people were killed, most of whom were Tamils who form the majority in Northern Sri Lanka. Despite the end of military conflict, war continues by other means, and its representation encapsulates a nationalist politics of victory that at once vilifies the defeated LTTE “terrorists” and excludes Northern Tamils from the Sri Lankan polis. The LTTE’s former hideouts, training facilities, weapons, and vehicles are now tourist sites on display for public viewing.

This study tests the differences in the shared understanding of the backpacker cultural domain between two groups: backpackers from Australasia and backpackers from Asian countries. A total of 256 backpackers responded to a questionnaire administered in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Krabi Province (Thailand). Cultural consensus analysis (CCA) guided the data analysis, to identify the shared values and the differences in the backpacker culture of the two groups.  The findings revealed that while the two groups share some of the backpacker cultural values, some other values are distinctively different from one another. The study provides the first empirical evidence of the differences in backpacking culture between the two groups using CCA. Based on the study findings, we propose some marketing and managerial implications.

Relationships between foreign tourists and members of the visited population in Cuba tend to be ridden with ambiguities with regard to their instrumental and commoditized dimensions. In the realm of sexual encounters, these ambiguities become a source of moral controversy, as they call into question notions of ‘sex tourism’ and ‘prostitution’. Focusing on how foreign men travelling to Cuba account for sexual relationships with Cuban women, this article shows how a variety of notions of tourism and of being a tourist are played out to justify people's engagements. From the establishment of continuities between sexual seduction ‘at home’ and ‘on tour’, to the normalization of sex for money exchanges, to the quest for an ‘authentic Cuban sexuality’, different modalities and moralities of travel are actualized in tourists' narratives, alternatively silencing and highlighting transformations in the places, people, and conceptions of tourism. In addressing the question of what counts as ‘transformation’, this article sheds light on the situated and purposeful ways this notion is deployed, the controversies, and struggles it generates, as well as its moral underpinnings, affordances, and limits. Ultimately, this illustrates the interests of investigating change and notions of change in tourism in a reflexive and empirically grounded manner.

The purpose of this paper is to articulate a set of ethical standards for international volunteer tourism. The standards are focused on promoting fair trade learning principles in the management and operation of volunteer programmes. Because of the unique social mission, research, and evaluation capacities of higher education, we propose first applying these principles specifically to international volunteer programmes operating at the university-community nexus. These standards have emerged through a collaborative, in-person and online process during the last two years with input by numerous concerned global citizens, international education practitioners and researchers, nongovernmental organization representatives, and community members. The document shared below represents current ‘best practice’ for maximizing the benefits and minimizing the negative impacts of volunteer tourism programmes for both host communities and volunteers.

Following a discussion on the relationship between participatory planning, collaboration, and tourism visioning, this article describes the development of a tourism-specific visioning process. A case study of a facilitated tourism visioning process in the city of Surprise, Arizona, USA is presented. This case study provides an example of the potential power of the visioning process for a destination community developing a tourism vision to guide collaborative tourism planning. Insights from three stakeholder workshops are discussed in two contexts: (1) long-term recommendations of what is needed for implementing a successful tourism visioning process and development of a community tourism plan, and (2) a manageable set of short-term “successes” that could be accomplished by stakeholders collaborating to establish a tourism vision.

The purpose of this article is to identify diversity of tourist activity rate of students, both in terms of social as well as in space. A questionnaire survey, which included a chosen randomly group of students (n = 645) Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, representing 5 courses (full-time and part-time studies I° and II°) at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences has been conducted. The analysis contained: national and international destinations of realized and preferred tourist trips, their way of organization, selected forms and types of tourism and tourist needs sources. The obtained results clearly confirm that university students are characterized by a high rate of tourist activity (Gryszel i in. 2008, Biernat 2011b, Buchta, Skiert 2012) and implements and prefer active holidays in the country (Gołembski i in. 2002, Latosińska, Ludwicka 2010). It should be recognized that the interests of academic youth take some of the leading places in the structure of all the interests that students exhibit (Brojek, Bochenek 2012). By participating in tourism, they seek to accomplish several goals most of recreation, entertainment, and learning about the world. Since mid 20th century, the world tourism has been through rapid change and innovation. Leisure-time assessment method and the expectations of today’s tourist vary, as his education and awareness level increases particularly in the Information Society. In this study, the developments in the world tourism industry and tourist profiles, incoming tourism of Turkey, travelling objectives and preference reasons of foreigners towards our country, some information about incoming visitors to Turkey coming to the years 2000s, while the world tourism experienced significant improvements, are given based on statistical data published by the institutions. Also in this study, the importance of maintenance of these types of statistics is highlighted, and necessity of effective usage of these data in evaluation in Turkish tourism development strategies is expressed.

This study examines Facebook page “events” as a medium for promoting special events to consumers. It proposes a Social Technology Acceptance Model, an extension of the Technology Acceptance Model, to examine the influence of Trust, Strength of Relationships (knowledge-sharing factors), and Perceived Enjoyment in forming consumer attitudes toward Facebook and consumer intentions to attend an event. A total of 155 data were collected through a survey administered on a special event organizer’s Facebook “page.” Findings suggest that users’ Trust, Strength of Relationships and Perceived Enjoyment significantly affect users’ acceptance of Facebook and their intentions to
attend an event. The theoretical impact of the current study of knowledge sharing can be valuable to understanding Facebook usage behavior. Moreover, by integrating concepts of Trust and Strength of Relationships, empirical support illustrates that social media provides event marketers a means to benefit from the strong and weak ties of individual social networks.
