High Expectations? Why not !

A generic framework for achieving high quality in a student’s performance

Abstract:
High school students are used to a certain way of working in a protective school environment, closely supervised by their teachers. The collaborative partnership between Mediterranean College and the University of Derby involves a transition to the more demanding academic environment, which requires certain skills and specific ways of operating and working. This includes the need to discover and acquire knowledge, but also to critically evaluate all the information that is offered to them and it demands a well-defined working framework. As students themselves begin to understand the academic demands of the modules, the role of the academic tutor is vital in showing the way to these students and helping them progress, up to the level where their work can even become part of the academic community by publication in a conference or journal. If these requirements are met, we can definitely have high expectation from nearly all of them. This workshop is led by Mediterranean College and involves participation by a Programme Leader and a group of students studying Business and Computing undergraduate and post graduate programmes.

Current times are witnessing multiple challenges in the economic, political and social domain, which modern citizens and professionals are required to address with an enterprising mindset. Young people have not been left intact by the spirit of new capitalism. In the face of ongoing educational changes on a European level, being a student transcends the boundaries of the school community. Young people thus oscillate between different identities: on the one hand, that of the child who lives in the here and now, and on the other hand, that of the pseudo-adult and in-the-make professional. In this light, the paper explores the new role of the professional student and discusses the implications of a neoliberal student model. It concludes by proposing a more humanistic understanding of the student role, which positions young people in a dynamic learning process and relationship with the world around them.

Our curriculums in general tend to focus primarily on external forms of knowing and being while students’ inner dimensions are often ignored.  In the clamor for high standards and higher test scores there is little talk about imagination, emotions, self-actualization, joy, exploration, or imagination.  This article makes a case for addressing the inner curriculum and describes seven language arts activities that can be used in this regard

Introduction
Educational institutions initiate student research programs to prepare generations of
scientist physicians. This study aims at describing and comparing the recent models of
Egyptian university research programs.
Methods
It's a cross sectional study using online survey delivered to all reachable student
research groups. We compared students in universities which initiated student research
programs and students in universities with no student research programs then we
compared the mandatory and optional programs. We used SPSS version 22 and
employed Chi-Square test for categorical variables.
Results
Initiating student research program raises students' publications in international peer
reviewed journals (p<0.001). However, Students' participation in conferences isn't
affected (p=0.106). Mandatory research program yields more publications than
optional program (p=0.011). Student motives aren't affected by initiating student
research program (p=0.112). Student motives aren't associated with gender (P =0.12)
nor academic grade (P =0.83).
Conclusion
Initiating a mandatory research curriculum is very effective to raise students'
publication. We recommend this approach to be generalized on the level of Egyptian
universities.

University-employer cooperation is one of the most important forms of cooperation in the economy, needed for economic development and sustainable growth and has become a key emphasis in higher education policy in recent years. The main goal is to achieve an equal partnership between universities and employers aimed at strengthening of economic development at the national, regi-onal and local level. This goal can be achieved through active support (in information and knowledge) of local businesses and entrepreneurship in developing and realization of their ideas, and by linking students with their future employers, through various employer-seeking students associations and employers associations. Authors will analyze the university-employer cooperation in Poland, United Kingdom and Croatia and try to give an answer if the current cooperation is satis-fying, and if is not, how can it be enhanced.

This international and interdisciplinary conference will address recent political developments in the academy that points to increasing administrative moves directed at censoring Palestine as a subject for intellectual engagement and organizing efforts.  The degree and intensity of censorship has taken many forms, most recently with several high profile cases:

β€’ the rescinding and subsequent firing of Associate Professor Steven Salaita at The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign;
β€’ the unwarranted investigation of faculty members such as Professors Rabab Abdulhadi at San Francisco State University  for undertaking constitutionally protected activities of free speech about the state and people of Palestine;
β€’ the unfair and systematic targeting of SJP, MSA and Arab student organizations for sponsoring and organizing events for Palestinian awareness;
β€’ promoting and funding campus groups and activities that only approach Palestine with an apolitical agenda while isolating, prosecuting and criminalizing those operating independently, critical of Israel, opt not to engage in university crafted dialogues  or supporting BDS; and,
β€’ other instances that includes the official withdrawal of university sponsorships for academic conferences; reduced funding or the cancellation of events; additional requirements beyond the normal process that involves administrative evaluations, policy reminders, speaker approvals, and security precautions.

In addition to this extraordinary institutional intervention, external organizations, on more than one occasion, have been allowed to influence, dictate, and prescribe the terms of freedom of speech through codes of civility that severely undermines the standing of Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims as an educational topic and a political campaign.  The assault on free speech and academic freedom has also come disguised as civil rights complaints under Title VI directed at Department of Education funding.  Lawsuits targeting the university for the specific purpose of censoring Palestine have already created a chilling effect on college campuses despite federal Judge Richard Seeborg dismissing such claims in Felber v. Yudofheld stating β€œ[a] very substantial portion of the conduct to which [the complainants] object [i.e., speech critical of Israel] represents pure political speech and expressive conduct, in a public setting, regarding matters of public concern, which is entitled to special protection under the First Amendment.”

This conference seeks papers that analyze the academy’s role in the institutional censorship of Palestine and the methods deployed to achieve this outcome.  More broadly, how censoring Palestine at the university is linked to ongoing efforts in the erosion of free speech and academic freedom due to the corporatization and militarization of institutions of higher learning is encouraged.  As the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement takes hold on college campuses across the United States and Europe, how the academy responds by establishing β€œcivility codes” directly marginalizes and criminalizes participants who happens to be not only faculty, students and staff – members of an intellectual, social, and political community – but also members exercising their right to free speech.
