EVERYDAY FEMINIST RESEARCH PRAXIS. Doing Gender in the Netherlands

Everyday Feminist Research Praxis: Doing Gender in The Netherlands offers a selection of previously unpublished work presented during the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies (NOG) conferences. Reflecting the wide spectrum of interdisciplinary gender studies, this volume is organised into four sections along four conceptual knots. These thematic entry-points are space/time, affectivity, public/private, and technological mediation. The central emphasis of this volume is twofold: first, the everyday is approached as a concretely grounded site of micro-political power struggles. Second, the contributors make explicit connections between theory and their everyday feminist research practices. They provide a reflexive account of their research, and put into words what drives them.
The relation between theory and practice has been a key concern of feminist research in recent decades. The two domains are here not considered as oppositional, but rather contributors chart their interconnections and entanglements. The authors cover a wide topical area that includes, amongst others, digital representations of women movements; European homonationalism; fashion modelling and labour; sexual identities; child-birthing discourses; digital documentaries; fan fiction; and the post-human. As a whole, the interventions show how feminist research praxis remains crucial in critically disentangling naturalized routines of daily life, which in turn enables the scrutiny of, for example, the arbitrariness of entrenched power relations and the revealing of contradictory and layered, personal and collective, everyday trajectories. Everyday feminist research praxis, thus, energises possibilities for new forms of recognition, representation and redistribution of power.

Den här skriften handlar om kreativt skrivande och kritiskt
tänkande, två centrala kunskapsområden för genusforskning
och feministisk forskning idag. Inom genusvetenskapen, men
också i den genusforskning som bedrivs inom ramen för andra
ämnesområden, har kritik av vetenskapliga metoder och utgångspunkter
varit grundläggande för stora delar av verksamheten.
Ifrågasättandet av en universell eller objektiv vetenskap
utgör själva grunden i genusvetenskapens curriculum. Som en
del i en sådan vetenskapskritisk och vetenskapsutvecklande
verksamhet ingår det kreativa vetenskapliga skrivande, och det kritiska tänkande, som
utvecklats inom genusvetenskapen.

Far from new, correlative and comparative conceptualizations of Jewish and queer studies go back to one of queer theory’s first, and most influential, accounts: Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s Epistemology of the Closet (1990). This article revisits Sedgwick’s comparison between the gay and the Jewess’s acts of coming out to delicately destabilize her dichotomized differentiation of them. Unconditionally endorsing her condemnation of homophobia, I nevertheless shift my lens to center Esther’s, rather than gay men’s, narrated experience at the heart of the article. Closely and carefully examining Esther’s utterances and performances throughout the entire Book of Esther to trace a multifaceted understanding of her fictionalized figure, I conflate Sedgwick’s narration of Esther with more elaborate examinations of Esther’s literary construction. Capturing Esther’s fluid textuality, I contest the very assumption that one’s coming out as queer—within cultural as well as sexuality discourses—indicates her intention to define and/or confine herself along strict, systematic, and/or static taxonomies.

The article presents the problem of motherhood of women with disabilities understood both as an individual experience and as a social construct. Based on biographical interviews and on the workshop material the authors indicate the most important factors in the sphere of reproductive rights of women with vision and hearing impairments as well as physical disabilities. The article discusses tabuization of sexuality, barriers of access to gynecological care, lack of adequate sexual education as well as frequently negative assessment of the ability to perform as a mother, dilemmas regarding the possibility of genetically transmitting the disability and providing the child with appropriate care. The impact of socioeconomic conditions on the possibility to perform the role of a mother is also demonstrated. The text concludes with a tentative answer to the question regarding a new model of motherhood of women with disabilities.
