  • Bonus points for experience scaling an application to handle an increasing user base. Familiarity with our current tools is a plus, but it's much more important that you be a fast learner who can pick up new technologies quickly.

Technologies we use
  • Ruby on Rails
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • Elasticsearch
  • Memcached
  • NginX
  • AWS
Email your Github profile and resume to hiring@academia.edu to apply.
UI ENGINEER

UI Engineer

We're building an Open Science platform to bring the world's research online, available to all, for free. As a User Interface Engineer, you’ll work closely with our design and product team to develop new interfaces and interactions. You’ll create flexible front-end patterns that will enable the entire team to develop new features quickly and easily. The interfaces you help build will be used by millions of people and greatly impact the future of Open Science.

The Role
  • Work with designers to build new products, interfaces, and UI patterns.
  • Write efficient, beautiful, and reusable front-end code that will power our entire application.
  • Rapidly iterate and A/B test features to develop the best possible user experience.
  • Develop and maintain code standards for our front-end. Ensure these standards through regular code reviews.

Skills
  • Expert knowledge of HTML & CSS. Experience with SASS or LESS is a plus.
  • Deep experience with JavaScript and frameworks like Backbone or AngularJS.
  • Experience with testing your code across multiple browsers.
  • Experience with creating and interpreting A/B tests.
  • Some knowledge of server-side languages and web frameworks. Experience with Ruby on Rails is a plus.
  • Experience maintaining and improving a large code base at a rapidly growing startup is a plus.
  • A natural desire to keep up with the latest web technologies and patterns.
Email your Github or Dribbble profile and resume to product@academia.edu to apply.
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNS

Software Engineering Interns

We're building an Open Science platform to bring the world's research online, available to all, for free.

What we're looking for
  • We'd like you to have some experience with one or both of the following:
  • Building Web applications in an MVC style. Rails experience is a plus but not required, as long as you've used something similar like Django or CakePHP.
  • Front-end development using JavaScript and CSS. Bonus points if you've tried CoffeeScript, Sass, or Less.
  • You should be a quick study and attentive to detail. You don't need to be an expert on everything we do, but you should be able to pick up the basics fast enough to make useful contributions.
  • We'll need you to work on site in San Francisco, either part-time or full-time, for at least four weeks.
What we're offering
  • A monthly stipend. The amount will depend on your experience and performance, and is likely to grow significantly if you exceed our expectations.
  • The opportunity to learn close-up about the inner workings of a high-growth startup with a small team.
  • A unique professional experience to add to your résumé. You'll have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the product and gain valuable, hands-on training.
Email your Github profile and resume to hiring@academia.edu to apply.
PRODUCT DESIGNER

Product Designer

We're building an Open Science platform to bring the world's research online, available to all, for free. While our current product doesn’t show it, we are deeply passionate about design and are firm believers in its power to shape the direction of a company. We are looking for someone who can see the product for what it could be rather than what it is. We have 17 million in total funding but we’re still a small team of 15. Because of this, we’re very agile and individuals have a high level of ownership in the success of the company.

As a Product Designer at Academia, you'll create features from concept to execution. You’ll work directly with the CEO & VP of Product to create the foundations a design culture and set a high bar for design across our product. Your work will be instrumental in furthering the goals of both the company and our community of 14,343,819 researchers.

The Role
  • Work with our small but passionate team to shape product ideas.
  • Create interaction flows.
  • Design beautiful interfaces.
  • Design and maintain a UI styleguide.
  • Help instill a design culture in the company as a whole.
  • Give and receive design and product feedback.
  • Participate in execution, observation, and interpretation of user research.
You Should Have
  • An online portfolio. Please provide a link in your application.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience designing web applications.
  • An intuition and appreciation for both the functional and visual elements of design.
  • A formal education in HCI, Design, or equivalent experience.
  • The desire to continuously learn and grow. We provide unlimited budgets for professional development.
It’d be Awesome to Have
  • Front-end development experience. HTML/CSS are great for prototyping. JavaScript experience would be amazing. Back-end experience would drop our jaws.
  • Management or hiring experience. You’ll be one of our first designers so being able to grow and lead a team would make you the ultimate unicorn.
  • Mobile design experience.
Email your Dribbble profile and resume to product@academia.edu to apply.
COMMUNICATIONS DESIGNER

Communications Designer

We're building an Open Science platform to bring the world's research online, available to all, for free. Do you instinctively know what makes a great brand? We’re looking for a talented Communications Designer to take ownership over all of our touch points. While 14,343,819 registered researchers is a great start, we believe this is just the beginning. Beautiful and thoughtful design will be critical to maximizing our goal of accelerating the world’s research.

This is a unique opportunity to define the early foundations of a design and product culture while still having the resources of a later stage company.

Your designs would appear across all forms of company communication, including emails, presentation decks, and promotional materials.

What we're looking for
  • A great portfolio
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Sketch
  • An intuitive grasp of Brand communication
  • An ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
  • Strong communication skills
  • The ability to both give and get critiques
  • A passion for learning and growing
