British participation in the historical process of European integration has been persistently framed as a policy dilemma of the highest order. This dilemma was itself coloured by the existence of policy traditions that oriented Britain away from Europe and towards political communities tied to a historical interpretation of British nationality. Euroscepticism is symptomatic of these traditions and dilemmas whilst at the same time sustaining them. But Eurosceptics face a dilemma of their own. What serious alternative do they propose? The notion of the ‘Anglosphere’ was adopted on the Eurosceptic right of British politics as an alternative to European integration. As a politics of disengagement by the Cameron government played out in Europe, a policy of re-engagement began with Britain’s former Dominions. Here was a response to a political dilemma that not only used historical consciousness and political tradition as its point of departure, but as its place of destination too.

Whenever asked to name his most significant accomplishment as West Germany's first Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer would invariably reply: "The alliance with the free West." Scholars have echoed his assessment, citing the Federal Republic of Germany's successful integration into the American-led West (Westbindung) as the key to its postwar economic and political recovery. Behind this simple success story, however, lies a much more complicated history: Adenauer and the CDU/CSU remained ambivalent about the ultimate relationship between Europe, Germany, and the United States within the West, torn between visions of Continental European integration based on Franco-German reconciliation and of an Atlantic community linking Europe and the "Anglo-Saxons." These differences eventually erupted into a damaging public conflict between "Atlanticists" and "Gaullists," which colored Adenauer's last years and, after his retirement in 1963, led directly to the failure of his successor, Ludwig Erhard.
The opening of various personal and party archives over the past few years has now made the entire Adenauer Era accessible for historians. As one of the first efforts to use that material to re-examine existing conventional wisdom about the period, this book traces the roles of Adenauer and the CDU/CSU in shaping Westbindung. Adenauer emerges as a skilled and resourceful (if also mistrustful and devious) politician, and as a distinctly German statesman, maneuvering between allies and adversaries to shape both the Western community and the German role in it, leaving a legacy that still influences contemporary German-American and European-American relations.

This study examines the integration and involvement of trade unions from New Member States in three European trade union federations. It investigates what the participation and cooperation of trade unions from NMS looks like, in what specific forms they communicate with the European federations, which priorities and positions they bring into account and to what degree they influence the policy of the federations. The focus is on confederations and branch unions in the fields of mining, metal, commerce and finance in Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.

This article analyzes the Eastern Partnership by the viewpoint of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), which is launched by the European Commission in March 2003 and started to be implemented following the approval of the ENP Strategy Paper proposed in May 2004. The ENP, for the first time ever, presents the entire vision of the Union's policy as concerns its eastern and southern neighbours, for which the European Union (EU) fails today to see any real perspectives of membership. It builds on the existing contractual relations, but offers the prospect to gradually move from traditional trade and
cooperation towards closer political, social and economic integration between the EU
and its neighbours by enhancing partnership and bringing together the principal
instruments at the disposal of the Union and its Member States. The emerging question is whether the ENP is sufficiently attractive so as to induce the neighbouring countries to adopt or accelerate the adoption of the types of economic and political reforms that were implemented in the new member states during their accession processes or whether the planned structures will work in the absence of membership as a target. Although the specifics of the ENP are still being developed, the lack of incentives as regards to unclear accession to the EU is identified as the main weakness of the ENP.
