This is a basic guide on statistics written in layman's terms and which assumes almost no prior mathematical knowledge. It is designed for students of the humanities and certain social sciences, who are generally not offered statistics options as part of their academic course, but who may be required to understand and critique journal, newspaper or other articles that use statistics. Statistics are used increasingly in both the academic and public sphere and, as well as being a useful life skill, a basic knowledge of statistics will also become important for a range of students considering career paths in journalism, politics, banking, NGO's and a whole range of other occupations. The first version of this guide covers the basis of statistics, distribution and probability, and then goes on to explain with examples a range of statistical tests and when to use them, and how to read and interpret them, including: Pearson's & Spearman's tests of correlation, T-tests, Chi squared, ANOVA, Linear Regression, Multiple Regression and General Linear Models.
Please note, this guide is not exhaustive, and is deliberately written in a simplified form so that non-specialists can understand it.

This presentation by Patrick Neveling is based on a book project, which will offer a pioneering empirical study and analysis of a major development in the global political economy of capitalism after the Second World War; the rise of export processing zones (EPZs) and special economic zones (SEZs), which are set up by nation-states offering tax breaks and pre-built industrial infrastructure to bring in foreign-direct investment in manufacturing.
