It asks the ethical question of how to speak someone else's words when dealing with documentary material in performance practice. This paper explores the simultaneous eroticization and exoticization of Ancient Greece in the choreography of Madame Mariquita (1830-1922) for the Opéra and the commodification of this exotic ancient Greek eroticism in the popular fashion and music press in fin-de-siècle Paris. Building on work by art historian, Nancy Troy, and musicologist Mary Davis on the fashion press’s influence on modernist music and theater, this paper looks specifically at how a particular brand of exotic opera engaged with the popular press to create a truly multimedia cultural phenomenon that influenced musical “fashions.”
Contributing to popular magazines like Musica, Comœdia Illustré, and Le Théâtre, Mariquita helped sell fantasies of the ancient world to a predominantly female readership. Mariquita and her students capitalized on the magazines’ format as they wrote articles and posed for photographs that highlighted the fashionably exotic nature of the dances they created. Operas choreographed by Mariquita, like Erlanger’s Aphrodite (1906), and the early Greek inspired works of the Ballets Russes fed the hunger for the exotic on the pages of Parisian periodicals. Including these presses into the discourse provides a tantalizing entry into how exotic Greek opera functioned within a multimedia society coming to terms with a rapidly advancing media frontier.

In this paper we present some technical aspects on the virtual masks created by the composer Georgia Spiropoulos for the needs of Les Bacchantes (IRCAM, 2010), a solo opera for one performer, tape and live electronics. In The Bacchæ the performer interprets four different characters within the interactive environment in Max/MSP. The “vocal masks” are seen as a metaphor of Euripides’ dramatic personae in which masks of the same actor are used as virtual scores which register the vocal trace of the performer and give further vocal agility, extensibility, mutation, multiplication and augmented vocality.

Linda Hutcheon, University Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto, was the University of Konstanz's choice to give the prestigious Wolfgang Iser lecture in September 2013, which simultaneously opened that year's annual convention of the German Anglistenverband (organized by Silvia Mergenthal and Reingard M. Nischik). Within this framework, Linda Hutcheon spoke to me about the development of various strands of thought in her impressive body of work - encompassing nine monographs, several collaborative books, and literally hundreds of articles and book chapters. We discussed the importance of crossing borders between disciplines, media, and nations, as well as of positioning oneself as a reader and critic. Other topics included her own intellectual background in comparative literature, in Canadian Studies, and in her more recent interdisciplinary projects on opera; recent developments in and since postmodernism; and the interconnections within her work on various practices of repetition with a difference, whether seen as postmodern, as parody, or as adaptation.

In the nineteenth century, Russian composers and critics were encouraged to cultivate a national style to distinguish their music from the dominant Italian, French, and German traditions. Not Russian Enough? explores this aspiration for a nationalist musical tradition as it was carried out in the cosmopolitan world of opera. Rutger Helmers analyzes the cultural context, music, and reception of four important operas: Glinka's A Life for the Tsar (1836), Serov's Judith (1863), Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orléans (1881), and Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride (1899). He discusses such issues as the influence of Italian and French opera, the use of foreign subjects, the application of local color, and the adherence to the classics, and considers how these related to a sense of "Russianness." Besides yielding new insights for each of these works, this study offers a fresh perspective on the function of nationalist thought in the nineteenth-century Russian opera world.
