In the context of religious and spiritual communities that
may marginalize those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, or queer (LGBTQ), we explore how 11 women reconfigured
potentially conflicting spiritual and sexual/gender identities.
Interviews with women in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Canada’s
East coast, indicated some used faith traditions to try to change
themselves, but most found ways to disengage from or alter
their spiritual relationships. Many losses were entailed as women
rejected or were discarded by faith communities. In reconfiguring
their spiritual lives, women drew from former traditions, explored
new paths, and forged individual relationships to the spiritual.

Processes of navigating intersections between spiritual/religious identity and lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) identity are just beginning to be explicated. In-depth
interviews with 35 LGBTQ adults from a range of backgrounds explore experiences with both
religion and spirituality. While not all participants experienced conflicts, the psychological and
emotional harms done to some participants through organized religion were extensive, and knew
no age boundaries. Disconnection from bodies and delayed sexual activity were common. Many
left formal religions; those who stayed distinguished between religious teachings and institutions,
and between religion and spirituality. Heightened knowledge of theology proved helpful to some.
Limitations and implications for counseling are discussed.

This paper is an (unpublished) literature review of three books on the Taíno, which focuses on their political, social, and religious life. This review is primarily concerned with identifying features of these works' significance for the ethnographic study of religion and society in the Caribbean today. The three books under review are Irving Rouse's The Tainos: Rise and Decline of the People Who Greeted Columbus; William F. Keegan's Taíno Indian Myth and Practice: The Arrival of the Stranger King; and Fatima Bercht, Estrellita Brodsky, John A. Farmer, and Dicey Taylor (eds.) for Museo del Barrio's collection Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean.

It is in the grand narrative of human history that we find a universal disposition to use spirituality as a form of understanding man’s role and purpose in the physical universe. From as far back as the Bronze Age, the Middle Ages, and to our present-day post-modernity, we have records, documents and historical evidences that help affirm mankind’s obsession with the religious. The Babylonians had their tales and their gods, the Egyptians had their beliefs of the after-life, the Greeks had their Mount Olympus, even modern-day civilizations boast a diversity of religious beliefs across the globe. The Western world has experienced the rise of Christianity, witnessing the growing population of Islam, and studying the resurgence of Judaism. The Eastern world has featured its own various forms of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and many others which now permeate into the West. To list humanity’s religious beliefs, from past to present, would delve into the thousands if not millions.
Various studies have been conducted on the world’s major religions, even on ancient Mesopotamian civilizations, and they all exhibit this universal disposition, religious belief as a form of understanding man’s role and significance in the material world. However, studies on Mesoamerican civilizations are scarce on this front, and not easily made available to the public. What can the Mesoamerican civilizations tell us about religious belief and humanity’s role in the cosmos? What type of religious and social values do we discover from a time and place which remained untouched from direct external influences, prior to Spanish colonization?

The Enneagram and Centering Prayer are explored as tools for transformation of the Shadow Archetype. An attempt is made to demonstrate that the Enneagram can be used to uncover shadow qualities of personal unconscious motivations and deeply rooted influences and prejudices of a dysfunctional nature. Through the consistent practice of Center Prayer (over an extended period of time) these dysfunctional qualities are brought into full consciousness and transformed into positive motivations, influences, attitudes, and behaviors. Existing literature, the author’s personal journey, and independent research assist in demonstrating the effectiveness of these powerful tools.
