Afghan Honeydew Melon

Crunchy, juicy, sweet, refreshing can't be better than that. I grew up with it.

Easy to grow, ripens over long period, but has a slightly musky casaba flavor. Think it is a stretch calling this one a honeydew. Not the sweetest flavor. Turns color when ripe.

Best honeydew type melon I've ever eaten. Seed may rot easily in excess damp or rainy conditions. Plants are quite drought resistant, requiring less frequent watering than Armenian cucumbers or OrangeGlo watermelon for comparison. Kabul and surrounding areas are quite hot and arid in the summer so this melon is probably best suited to a Mediterranean climate like the Sacramento Valley. We had a later start and a cooler than normal summer here in the Sierra Nevada foothills (2011) so the melons ripened late; they also split due to early fall rain. In spite of the obstacles the flavor was outstanding! Crunchy, somewhat coarse, rich flavored green flesh, similar to Tendral de Verde but better. I kept scraping with the spoon right into the rind! May be difficult to tell when the melon is at peak ripeness. I will definitely grow this one again.
