Clippers re-signs Cassell, Radmanovic Leaves, Tim Thomas Signs

Posted by: david on 07/01/2006 - 09:13 PM

Wow- what a quick twist of events- this excerpt from this LA Times breaking story sums things up:

The Lakers moved quickly on the first day of free agency by snatching away a piece from their cross-town rival and agreeing to terms Saturday with Radmanovic, a three-point shooting forward who has made a career of stretching defenses.

The Clippers reacted swiftly after Radmanovic and Cassell apparently reneged on agreements to stay with them, then reaching terms with the sharp-shooting Thomas and making a push for free-agent guard Bobby Jackson as a back-up plan in case Cassell left.

But Cassell, the 36-year-old point guard and undisputed on-court general of the Clippers last season, late Saturday agreed to a two-year, $13-million contract, keeping intact a Clippers nucleus that lasted longer than the Lakers in this year's playoffs.

This Clipper fan will sleep much better tonight knowing this. I think this shows all NBA fans that Donald Sterling and the Clippers are commited to winning. Signing Cassell was crucial...he was our leader last year. I know he'll be 37 this year and will be making $6.5 million but with Livingston backing him up he won't have to play major minutes. Having him will also help Livingston's development.
At first I thought losing Radmanovic and getting Thomas was pretty much an even trade. However, I think Thomas will have no problem of accepting his role as a bench player while Radmanovic has always wanted (and pouted) about being a starter. Also, the Thomas contract is for one less year than Radmanovic. So actually this could turn out better...I just wished it wasn't the Lakers he was going to.
So the Clippers look strong for next year. Let's just hope they come to camp healthy and stay that way all year.
Also, I been doing some research and the first round draft choice that the Clips got from Minnesota in the Cassell-Jaric trade is lottery protected. The Clippers will not get the pick if it is a top 10 pick through 2011. It becomes unprotected in 2012. So lets all hope that the Timberwolves don't make the playoffs next year, but get the 11th pick in the draft!!

The Lakers nor the Clippers could manage to guard him. He made one clutch shot against each team that helped turn the playoff series around for the Suns. So, since the Clips couldn't beat him they might as well sign him. Even though he is 3 years older than Vlad, his numbers and shooting percentage actually went up during the playoffs. He locked up for 4 years. So we hold court. Won one and lost one. Jamfan

Im a little sad we are losing Vlad Rad, but its great that sam has signed for two more years. Tim Thomas is good - him and Sam have been on teams together in the past, and whilst sometimes hes a bit erratic, it could work out.

It should be a great season - Cut might take a more active role, Corey Maggette wont be injured, and all but vlad rad are there :D

Cant wait!

I'm so happy, Cassell really deserves his due. God bless Donald Sterling
