In Lemberg, Lwów, L’viv, 1914–1947: Violence and Ethnicity in a Contested City, Christoph Mick uses the method of local history to unfold an interesting and com- plex thesis about the causes of ethnic violence in the former Habsburg crown land of Galicia. To explain what happened, he writes, we cannot merely credit historical differences among groups; we must likewise delve into how shifting regimes of gov- ernmental power reinforced, subjugated, or excluded certain populations along ethnic lines, and further, how cultures of memorialization and national remembrance (some- times supported by existing political systems, sometimes not) valorized and inscribed particular historical episodes to the benefit or detriment of other indigenous groups.

La Unión Europea (UE) ha promovido una exitosa transformación normativa en sus relaciones con Georgia y Moldavia en el marco de la Asociación Oriental. Ciertamente, ambos Estados han tomado los estándares europeos como la guía que orienta e impulsa ambiciosas reformas en sus respectivos contextos domésticos, en áreas tan diversas como la consolidación de sus sistemas democráticos o el respeto hacia los derechos humanos y libertades fundamentales. Sin embargo, pese a los logros alcanzados, consideramos que se trata de un punto de inflexión ya que se han de seguir llevando a cabo más avances. Especialmente, Moldavia que, frente a Georgia, ha ralentizado su transformación hace algo más de un año.

La actuación de la UE en el vecindario oriental refleja su naturaleza claramente normativa, distinta a otros actores internacionales, la cual se caracteriza por el impulso de una ambiciosa exportación de sus principales valores a través de la atracción y persuasión y, en ningún caso, la imposición. El éxito alcanzado en Georgia y Moldavia resulta esencial para entender la futura política exterior europea pues es una vigencia anticipada de la misma, en donde una mayor visualización y constatación de la dimensión más normativa definirá su actuación en la escena internacional, tal y como recoge la Estrategia Global sobre Política Exterior y de Seguridad de la UE de junio de 2016.

In 1922, Poland went through a turbulent election campaign to both Sejm and Senate, followed by the election for the first President of the Second Republic. As would soon turn out, the emotions generated by mass politics were impossible to contain. Politicians of the national right-wing, supported by the efficient press, used harsh language to combat their political opponents. The incidents that took place in Warsaw after the election of Gabriel Narutowicz, the non-right-wing candidate, for president proved how detrimental such an attitude really was. Journalists and politicians from the National Democracy (Endecja) camp heated up the atmosphere to the point beyond control. The
events in Warsaw are most interesting also from the European perspective. The article aims to sum up the knowledge on the subject acquired to date, and suggests that the Warsaw incidents of December 1922 are one of the keys to the history of the Second Republic.

This article explores the role of maps in the construction and development of ethnographic taxonomies in the mid-century Russian Empire. A close reading of two ethnographic maps of “European Russia” produced by members of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Petr Keppen (1851) and Aleksander Rittikh (1875), is used to shine a spotlight on the cartographical methods and techniques (lines, shading, color, hatching, legends, text, etc.) employed to depict, construct, and communicate these taxonomies. In doing so, this article draws our attention to how maps impacted visual and spatial thinking about the categories of ethnicity and nationality, and their application to specific contexts and political purposes within the Empire. Through an examination of Keppen’s and Rittikh’s maps, this article addresses the broader question of why cartography came to be regarded as such a powerful medium through which to communicate and consolidate particular visions of an ethnographic landscape.

SUMMARY:

Internet travelogues are very popular with Czech users of the World Wide Web and their number is constantly growing. Czech internet travelogues dedicated to the Balkans constitute an interesting and yet unexplored sources of images of the other, stereotypes and mental maps. The form of these travelogues varies from short descriptions of the trip accompanied by several pictures to extensive accounts of the journey, often based on personal diaries. The identity of the authors and participants is sometimes impossible to establish since they frequently use only their nicknames and do not provide sufficient personal information. However, it is more or less evident that most authors are young people aged 20-29, often college students or just out of school. Most internet travelogues analyzed for this survey identify Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia as countries that constitute the region of the Balkans. Greece and Croatia are not regarded as Balkan countries. Instead, they are viewed as typical destinations of Mediterranean summer tourism. The Balkans means much more than a simple geographic term. The terms Balkans (Balkán) and Balkanic (balkánský) as found throughout the analyzed travelogues signify something dangerous, wild, unpredictable, chaotic, absurd, and disorderly. These meanings are not necessarily negative - for many young Czech authors of the travelogues, the characterization of the Balkans as a wild and unpredictable place is in fact quite attractive. The Balkans is also associated with images of poverty, negligence, and visible reminders of the Yugoslav wars in the western part of the peninsula. However, signs of modernization and development can be described as Balkanic, too. The encounter with modernization in the supposedly wild and backward region is often regarded as something absurd - and absurdity is another notion strongly associated with the Balkans by many Czechs. Most travelogues are dedicated to Romania, Bulgaria and Montenegro. Visitors of these lands are attracted by a combination of wild and relatively unspoiled mountains, historical sights (monasteries, old towns...) and the Black Sea or the Adriatic beaches. Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia have received a more limited attention. These landlocked countries are often closely associated with the images of recent military conflicts. Until recently, the visa regime also made these countries less attractive than the first three for Czech tourists. Albania is definitely viewed as a symbolic heart of the Balkans, a little-known, exotic and dangerous land. For many visitors, however, a trip to Albania was a disappointment in the end  - the country failed to match their highly romantic or negative expectations and turned out to be "too normal" in their eyes.

The paper analyzes the ambigous representations of Slavic Muslims living in Montenegro in the travelogues, short stories and other texts written by Josef Holeček (1853-1929), prolific Czech writer, journalist and translator who dedicated much of his oeuvre to the South Slavs.

Like Feffer in Aftershock, also published in 2017, Ghodsee uses her travels, studies, lectures to audiences east and west to test the waters of eastern Europe today. This fresh approach to documenting history through the eyes of both participants and sympathetic observers is more like reading a page-turner spy novel, full of often misunderstood heroes and villains, crafty confidence tricksters and lots and lots of victims. Who needs fiction? You enter the theatre of life, feel its pulse.

Since 2015 the Eastern half of the EU has witnessed an increasing regional preoccupation for new cooperation initiatives. In general, these regional initiatives have broad goals and duplicate each other, ‘older’ regional initiatives (e.g. the V4) or EU’s own policies such as Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) or Energy Security Strategy. In addition, some of them have raised concerns among the ‘older’ EU members that they may undermine the unity of the union.
