In DC Comics, maybe more than any other publisher, there has always been a diversity of characters. The stories focus not just on human beings, but on aliens, demons, gods, cyborgs, androids, and robots.

Not to be confused with characters like Robert Crane or Cliff Steele, who were both called Robotman and had their human brains encased in robot bodies, these characters are purely mechanical constructs. They may have personalities that are deliberately artificially created or an accident of their creation. They may have no personalities at all but all are characters that have made a powerful impact on comics.
10 G.I. Robot
Created at the top-secret government facility Project M in 1942, the colloquially named GI Robot’s actual designation was the Jungle Assault Killer Experiment or JAKE for short. JAKE was a fully functional and self-reliant automaton and was programmed with military and combat training.
Accompanied by Marine Sgt. Coker and operating in the South Pacific primarily, the pair engaged in many successful missions in World War II. JAKE sacrificed himself to save a group of American sailors and was eventually replaced by a second model designated JAKE II that would become a member of the Creature Commandos.
9 Skeets
A security robot in the 25th century Space Museum, Skeets was kidnapped by Michael Carter in his quest to become a rich and famous 20th Century superhero. As Booster Gold, Carter used Skeets databank of historical records to stop crimes and disasters before they happened.

After Booster was killed saving Metropolis, Skeets disappeared and returned weeks later heavily weaponized and brought an army from the time stream. Skeets and company killed several of the new Everyman Project heroes along with Native American hero Superchief. Mr. Mind used Skeets' body like a cocoon to evolve into a giant universe eating monster. Rip Hunter, Booster and Supernova traveled back in time and defeated Mr. Mind by trapping him in a 52 seconds time loop within Skeets’ body.
8 Mekanique
Mekanique was created in a dystopic 23rd Century. Mekanique arrived in 1942 badly damaged at the Justice Society headquarters and attacked Firebrand but Robotman offered to repair her. She revealed an image of a girl that was supposed to stop a future war. However, saving this girl ensured that the war would definitely happen.
Mekanique betrayed the All-Star Squadron when she met Per Degaton. She shrank the entire team to miniature size and attacked them in a model of a futuristic city. Robotman activated a destruct mechanism in Mekanique’s body that caused her to explode and returned the team to regular size. Degaton grabbed Mekanique’s still intact head and escaped.
7 Hourman (Android)
Hourman was created in the 853rd Century from the Miraclo enhanced DNA of Rex Tyler, the original Hourman. The New God Metron traveled to the 853rd Century to make Hourman his apprentice and give him the Worlogog, a powerful device that manipulates time. But Hourman chooses to reject this offer and heads for the 20th Century.

Hourman joined the Justice League to defeat the Solaris virus and stayed with the team. He lived with former JLA “mascot” Snapper Carr and took the name Matthew Tyler. When the new JSA formed, he joined that team and was able to defeat Extant, the killer of Rex Tyler. Using the power of the Worlogog, Matthew moved Rex in time and died in his place.
6 Chemo
Chemo was a man-shaped, 25-foot tall receptacle for scientist Ramsey Norton to pour his “mistakes”. The last was a growth formula that stimulated plant growth. It filled the receptacle to the top and caused it to come to life, killed its “creator” and went on a rampage that was halted by the Metal Men. They became Chemo’s most frequent foe, although it battled Superman and the Doom Patrol on occasion.
Despite being destroyed numerous times, Chemo resurfaced many times alone or manipulated by others. The Secret Society of Super-Villains dropped Chemo on the city of Bludhaven, killing millions of people. Superman pushed the reconstituted Chemo into space.
5 Brainiac 8/Indigo
Created in an unspecified future, Brainiac 8 was created to assist the first Brainiac in his conquests. “Indigo” was a subprogram designed to appear naive. She emerged in the 21st Century badly damaged and seeking mechanical help. The Metal Men were unable to interface with her. She interfaced with Cyborg but damaged him. Both Young Justice and the Titans attacked and defeated her, but not before she inadvertently activated a Superman Robot that killed Lilith and Troia before Indigo destroyed it and shut down.

When Arsenal was reforming the Outsiders, Roy added Indigo the team, a decision that nearly caused Nightwing to quit immediately. Seemingly naive to the world and motivated to do good, Indigo quickly endeared herself to her teammates. Her Brainiac 8 persona began to reemerge and it was revealed that she was deliberately sent to kill Donna Troy because she would stop the Coluan takeover of their planet. Indigo begged her lover Shift to kill her before her Brainiac 8 programming fully took over. He transmuted her robot body to flesh, killing her.
4 The Metal Men
Created by the brilliant Will Magnus, the Metal Men were liquid metal robots that were given life by the Responsometer, a small microcomputer that simulated personality, emotions, and independent thought. It also animated the pure metals of the six Metal Men: Gold, Iron, Lead, Mercury, Platinum, and Tin. The Metal Men often found themselves fighting adversaries that were the products of mad science.
The Metal Men have frequently been destroyed but as long as Magnus could recover their Responsometers, the Metal Men could be rebuilt. Unusually, their metals seemed to inform their personalities. Mercury tended to be quick to anger, Lead was a bit dim-witted but solid and Tin was shy and stuttering.
3 The Superman Robots
The Superman Robots had some of Superman’s powers, strength, speed, and flight, and were used to stand in for Superman on missions. They were especially helpful when dealing with Kryptonite. Superman also employed the robot to safeguard his secret identity.

In recent times, pollution levels had adversely affected the Superman robots, rendering them unstable. When Krypto arrived on Earth, he nearly ripped Mongul’s throat out to save Lois. Superman believed he was too violent to live in Metropolis and confined the dog to the Fortress of Solitude with a Superman robot that gave off Kal-El’s “scent” to keep the dog content. A Superman robot was manipulated by Brainiac 8 to kill Donna Troy and Lilith.
2 Amazo
Created by scientist Professor Ivo, Amazo was an android that had absorption cells that allow him to absorb the powers of any metahuman that he encountered. This made him one of the most deadly foes that the Justice League has ever faced. Amazo was initially created to do anything possible to achieve Ivo’s primary goal: to find any means to achieve immortality.
Amazo grew far beyond his original programming. He gained a sense of sentience and even emotion, becoming resentful of his ancestor Hourman’s presence. Amazo’s body has been destroyed many times but he was rebuilt or downloaded into new forms many times.
1 Red Tornado
One of the first androids of the Silver Age, Red Tornado became an important hero and was often at the center of the universe defining events. The Red Tornado was created by scientist T.O. Morrow to infiltrate the Justice Society of America and destroy them. The Tornado Champion merged with the android but lost his memories. The Tornado worked with the JSA for years and seemingly sacrificed his life to save the JLA, JSA and Seven Soldiers of Victory but actually survived and joined the Justice League.

Red Tornado was a valued member of the League and despite being destroyed several times, the League always reassembled his body and his essence soon returns. Several attempts to create “better” bodies happened but he invariably found himself back in his original self-repairing body. Tornado found love with his girlfriend Kathy Sutton and their adoptive daughter Traya.
