Collection of essays by Ukrainian and Polish art critics and artists published as a part of the exhibition ArtWork (Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv, Ukraine - Dworcowa Gallery, Wroclaw, Poland) in 2017
INTRODUCTION
In 2017, Mystetskyi Arsenal and Dworcowa Gallery (Wroclaw, Poland) hosted the exhibition ART WORK. The brainchild of curators Alisa Lozhkina and Ewa Sulek, the project featured the works of more than 60 artists from Ukraine and Poland. It addressed the future of work in an ever-changing world, and the work of the contemporary artist, which remains undervalued and not fully understood by the general public. These are issues that are relevant in both the local and global contexts. After the ART WORK project, exhibitions and symposiums on similar topics were held at several leading world institutions, including Work Marathon at London’s Serpentine Gallery in August 2018. This subject was also the focus of several presentations at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale.
A question on everyone’s mind today is what our world will look like if all work is automated. What will people have left in a coordinated system fully subordinate to artificial intelligence? Maybe the optimists’ rosy pre- dictions will hold true, and, as Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol proposed, everyone will become an artist as soon as they are freed from the need for grueling daily work. Or, on the contrary, maybe humanity as we know it will deteriorate and be surpassed by a hybrid breed?
In the 20th century, the artist first traveled the road now being taken by the rest of humanity. Freed from the tyranny of craftsmanship, he found himself in a terra incognita—a new territory of intangible labor. Today, the artist is not someone with technical skills, but rather someone who can generate ideas and meanings, and then translate them into powerful images. The artist’s work has become less visible, but it has not gone away.
The intellectual result of the ART WORK project is a book of the same name in which leading artists, art and cultural critics, sociologists, and the project’s curators reflect on related topics. The subject of work in the modern world and artistic work, in particular, is endless. The texts in this book are only the beginning of a long discussion, and we hope that they will inspire those interested in learning more about a topic that is central to our era.

Collapse of the Soviet Union was a social turbulence of immense scale. The second half of the 1980s and the early 1990s was a time when all core values of soviet society changed. “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times” as Charles Dickens would have put it. The superpower’s decline gave birth to a huge wave of artistic and spiritual seeking. In fact, it was an extremely rebellious decade when along with political system both cultural and spiritual landscapes underwent rapid and radical transformation.

November 17, 1993. Kyiv botanical garden. A young man, trying to fly, falls from a tower under construction. The unidentified body marked as ‘A foreigner’ laid for nearly a month in one of the capital morgues. The artist Oleg Holosiy, who recently returned from Munich, was dressed too well for the post-Soviet overall poverty. He was 27, which is a mystical number in many talents’ biographies. The death of one of the new Ukrainian art leaders shocked an entire generation and drew a symbolic line under the heroic era of the Kyiv squat on Paris Commune street.

old age. Each era chooses its lyrical hero incorporating the archetypical idea about the creator and the spirit of the time. For the ’90s in Ukraine, Oleg Holosiy became such a hero embodying total liberation. His life had many things in common with Bananan Boy, a character from a cult movie of the ’80s called ‘Assa’. Oleg Holosiy stayed forever in the romantic transitory period, where there was no disappointment, impossible seemed possible, and whose main fetish was total freedom. Rediscovering the body and the consciousness as the main means to enjoy freedom was one of the main nerves of that time. An obvious example is the history of the main characters of Ukrainian New Wave, and especially Holosiy.

Texts, including poetry, diaries, and essays, constitute a distinct group in
Hnylytskyj’s legacy. His archive consists of large folders that contain an entire world. Sweet letters in his minuscule handwriting alternate with funny sketches and random notes. They are signs of the era that has already become history, the era that precedes electronic communication.
“Securities” is Hnylytskyj’s artistic diary kept from the late 1980s. These “notes in the margins” are appealing in their eccentricity, spontaneity and intimacy. As in any other diary, the figure of the author becomes the only uniting motif of the narrative: the plot revolves around inner dramas, emotions, and impressions. Sketches and drafts evocative of the artist’s future works alternate with rhymed or prose texts, fragments of phrases, or installation projects. The artist “thinks with his brush,” shining light on his artistic method as a process of ongoing self-reflection. Hnylytskyj’s graphic archive documents his long history of run-ins with the world at large. These collisions in the borderlands between the imaginary and the real produced new images, and Hnylytskyj’s artistic method lay in their spontaneous fixation.

Boris Lurie’s art, which includes sculptures
reminiscent of mounds of excrement and pornographic
novels with sadomasochistic elements,
is not for the bashful. In a world reinstituting
sanctimoniousness with a vengeance,
his work may be offensive to many. More than
half a century ago, the artist was already being
accused of relishing the aesthetics of scandal.
Today these accusations are compounded by
insinuations of misogyny, fetishism and objectifying
the female body. The real Boris Lurie
hardly fits the stereotype of sexist, toxic masculinity.
His most radical provocations are, first
and foremost, the product of his highly traumatic
personal experience and an invitation for
us to ponder the contradictory nature of man
and society.
At one time Lurie hobnobbed with the leading
lights of New York’s art world, ruled by abstract
expressionism and then Pop art. Nothing was
keeping Lurie from going with the flow and
eventually claiming his spot in the pantheon
of New York’s postwar renaissance. Yet he was
never one to do things the easy way.

If we look at the painting of one of the greatest Spanish artists – a Sevillian genius Francisco de Zurbarán, we see a philosopher and ecclesial leader Francisco Zumel as an introverted visionnaire, contemplatively writing down some very important thoughts. De Zurbarán captures a very intimate moment of creative inspiration in a person who, as we can immediately sense, is almost a saint. Maybe this is even the same historic moment when Zumel wrote down the life of Mercedarian Order’s legendary founder Pedro Nolasco? De Zurbarán portrays Zumel as a nobleman, not too young although not too old – probably in his late 40s. Francisco Zumel lived in 1540- 1607 and published Nolasco’s biography in 1588 when he was 48 years old. So, it could easily be Nolasco’s vita the birth of which we are witnessing. There are only three main visual accents in the painting – the author’s prominent figure as a gigantic mass of white, the text he is writing, and another closed book which peacefully rests on a side table – what else can it be other than the Holy Bible?
Unlike de Zurbarán’s idyllic picture, the text by Spencer J. Weinreich “Hagiography by the Book: Bibliomancy and Early Modern Cultures of Compilation in Francisco Zumel’s De vitis partum” evokes a completely different image of Zumel and his creative endeavors. Instead of de Zurbarán’s polished spiritual perfection, we see one of the leading Mercedarian intellectuals involved in practices, totally suspicious from the point of view of a contemporary scholar. It’s a new, ambiguous and unpredictable Francisco Zumel. He is standing at night alone at the monastery’s library trying to cope with anxiety and writer’s block that is torturing him when he is supposed to complete his grand work – a large volume of updated Mercedarian Order’s constitutions and other important texts including the one where he got stuck – the biography of
the order’s founder, a respected man of many virtues and a canonized saint – Pedro Nolasco. Zumel is taking books from the shelves one by one but nowhere is he able to find anything related to Nolasco, an enigmatic medieval protector of the captives who apparently was not too much invested in immortalizing his personal story. How are you supposed to write someone’s biography if there are few to no sources on which you can rely? If you are a 16th-century Christian philosopher and if you are documenting the life of a saint, you have a surprisingly contemporary creative methodology at your service – a random collage of other saints’ hagiographies. As Spencer J. Weinreich proves you can go even further and toss the material using a really exciting tool – bibliomancy, the divination practice where a writer almost fully delegates his authority to blind chance.
