  • Is freelance writing finally recovering? Let's talk numbers. The last few years have been brutal for freelance writers. If you've felt that, you're not imagining it. AI is the obvious villain. Research from CESifo found job postings for automation-prone writing and coding work dropped 21% within just eight months of ChatGPT's launch. And that's before you factor in the economic picture: global growth slipping, inflation climbing, and marketing budgets (your client base) getting squeezed hard. Gartner's 2026 CMO survey found nearly 40% of marketing leaders planning to cut agency spend this year. Journalism hasn't fared better, with thousands of newsroom job cuts across the UK and US in the past year alone. So yes, it's been rough. But here's what I'm actually seeing on the ground. I run a membership that scans thousands of links every week to find paid writing work. It's the most real-time view of the market I have access to. And over the last six months, the numbers have shifted: from sharing 170-180 opportunities a week, to regularly hitting 230-240+. That's nearly a third more, built gradually and holding steady. Why? A few reasons: 🔹 The AI shine is wearing off. A recent Clutch survey found over half of consumers are now less likely to buy from brands they know use AI in their content. Readers can tell. Research from USC reviewing 130+ studies found AI output is consistently less varied than human writing. It raises the floor, but not the ceiling. 🔹 Cost is catching up with hype. Running the top-tier AI models at scale isn't cheap, and the cheaper models simply aren't good enough at writing to replace a professional. 🔹 Writers are getting proactive. Too many of us only reply to job postings and compete with a hundred others for each one. The writers actually landing work right now are increasingly the ones cold pitching, building a tight portfolio, identifying businesses with an obvious gap, and reaching out directly before any job post exists. I've had real success doing exactly the latter this year: pitching local restaurants on newsletters they didn't know they needed, and rewriting website copy for a moving company right after experiencing their terrible customer journey myself. Neither posted a job ad, yet both became clients. So is the writing world picking back up? Gradually, yes, though it's obviously still very tough. But there is real movement in the right direction, and the writers finding success are the ones being proactive about it. If you want the opportunities I'm seeing week to week, FWN members currently get 230-240+ paid pitch calls and writing jobs weekly, plus live sessions on pitching, pricing and outreach. 👉 Try it free for 7 days: https://lnkd.in/gbtBAGv7 And one very honest note: a membership isn't a guarantee of paid work. It only helps if you actually use it. Click the links, send the pitches, follow up. We're one part of the equation. You're the bigger part.

  • If your freelance admin currently lives across: ➡️ Your inbox ➡️ A spreadsheet you rarely open ➡️ Notes on your phone ➡️ A half-finished Notion board ➡️ An invoicing tool ➡️ A calendar you keep meaning to update …you probably do not need another generic productivity app. You need a system built for a freelance writer’s actual workload. That is why I created Finnygook. It lets you: ➡️ Track pitches and set follow-up reminders ➡️ Manage projects and break work into clear tasks ➡️ Keep drafts connected to the relevant project and client ➡️ Create and send branded invoices ➡️ Set payment reminders before an invoice becomes awkward ➡️ Track expenses and export them when tax season comes around ➡️ Sync key dates with Google Calendar As one early user put it: “It’s not trying to be my CRM, my accountant, and my second brain. It’s trying to answer what needs doing next.” That is the point. Try Finnygook free here: https://www.finnygook.com/ And you can use code FJN for 50% off your first three months.
