AI helps developers complete roughly 21% more tasks, but review time rises about 91%. We explore why faster coding requires redesigning everything around it: https://atbain.co/4rUHzOK
The review-time point is the useful part: AI speeds up the first draft, but a person still has to check it and stand behind it. We see the same in interview preparation. AI can draft a good answer in seconds, but the candidate still has to say it out loud and defend it under follow-up questions.
The number to watch is not the 21%. It is the 91%. Bain reports that developers complete roughly 21% more tasks with AI, while review time rises about 91%. Faster output moved the bottleneck to human review. It did not remove it.What it means for leaders: buying more AI tools will not fix this. Your constraint is now verification, governance, and the process around the work. This applies beyond engineering, to any function where AI speeds up making and a person still checks everything. What to do: name an owner for the delivery process. Automate routine checks. Reserve human review for high-risk changes. Track risk and quality on the same scorecard as speed.Speed you cannot verify is not an advantage.
Good one!
This matches a lot of what we’ve experienced. We’re spending less time writing code from scratch and more time understanding, testing, and reviewing what’s been generated. It’s changing how we approach development.
