Can Your Work Travel Without YOU in The Room?

Can Your Work Travel Without YOU in The Room?

In this edition, Darren Murph exposes the workplace mess AI can’t work around anymore - most companies are terrible at communication. Offices hid the evidence with desk-side explanations, emergency meetings and heroic acts of context recovery. AI agents don’t get that luxury. They can’t read the room, decode company lore or retrieve the key decision living rent-free in someone’s head. Darren reveals why low-context communication is becoming premium AI infrastructure, how remote work taught knowledge to travel and how to build a company brain that keeps teammates and agents moving - without dragging you back into the room.

⚡ The Office Was Covering for Bad Communication…

AI is exposing the truth.

Your smartest agent can’t read the room. It can only read what your company bothered to write down.

For years, vague instructions survived because someone could lean across a desk, hunt down the missing context or schedule a meeting to decipher what the sender meant.

Less of a workflow and more of a workhunt, if you ask me.

AI agents don’t share your memories, office folklore or suspiciously important private Slack thread between the golfing management.

Which exposes one inconvenient truth:

The premium AI skill isn’t prompting - it’s making your work understandable without you…to teammates AND agents.

In this guest feature, Darren Murph - former Head of Remote at GitLab and author of the new remote-AI tome Distributed - argues that low-context communication is essential infrastructure for intelligent work.

Darren helped scale GitLab across 65 countries using systems later ranked in the top 10% for organizational health. His big lesson is that remote work didn’t teach people to work from anywhere. It taught knowledge how to travel.

Low-context communication sounds like less context…plot twist! It’s the opposite.

It means assuming the recipient knows nothing - then sharing enough clarity for them to act without data-mining your brain.

Context engineering matters.

Good work travels with:

  • A clear outcome and reason
  • One maintained source of truth
  • Explicit ownership and authority
  • Relevant context (not the entire company archive, thanks Dave)
  • A definition of done that doesn’t need forensic analysis

This works for someone joining the team next Tuesday, a colleague asleep on the other side of the planet or an AI agent entering the workflow with exactly zero company mythology installed.

If your handoff needs a handoff meeting, start here.

Our new Low-Context Handoff Builder finds the gaps in your brief, scores its readiness and converts it into an editable handoff for Slack, email, agentic workflows or PDF.

✅ Do This Next

If work stops when you leave the room, you haven’t built distributed intelligence. What you’ve built is distributed dependency. Yikes.

We can all find our way to AI Utopia but our comms need an upgrade.

But here's what excites me: AI tools analyzing student videos - gestures, voice, body language. TalkMeUp evaluates how well you engage an audience through facial expressions and posture. For public speaking projects, it's game-changing feedback that human teachers simply can't provide consistently."

Forcing humans to compress complex context down to a low level just so AI can parse it is a mission impossible. The current gap between human nuanced context and machine understanding is simply too huge. Trying to low-context everything in human work is nearly impossible. The burden shouldn't be on humans to dumb down how they communicate. AI must evolve to bridge the understanding gap within existing context. Otherwise, AI becomes an operational bottleneck rather than an accelerator.

Great perspective! As an AI and full-stack engineer, I believe the real challenge in adopting AI agents isn't just the technology—it's how we structure knowledge and communication. Even the smartest AI agent can't deliver reliable results without clear context, ownership, and well-defined goals. Context engineering is becoming just as important as software engineering.

Without Me In The Room because I know much more about life but I am guiding you about your life according to the boundaries limit of your knowledge about life Much More, because I am a unique thinker Unique Thinker is good but more good is that continuously I am getting more additional knowledge about life with justification It means my work needs my presence in the room If I produce the same original copies of me then my work can travel without me in the room But the room needs my skills to get more additional knowledge about life continuously Because Science of Life and Soul has very deep infinite fruitful knowledge I am a lover of self intelligence It means I am against AI because it's knowledge is incomplete or incorrect AI means less people are doing the same working of many people in companies with the help of readymade software Readymade software means the growth of their skills to think more deeply stop Less people are doing the works of the majority people but the growth of the business needs human skills to establish good relationships or to sell the product AI means the growth of the business and skills stopped Because fired the majority of the people is a dishonest and unkind act

Thanks for sharing, Radically Remote and Crossover I am playing the role of your teacher in the room because my concept about life becomes the most clearer than you My work is to give you awareness about your life, health and skills etc to make them better to the best by yourself The room always needs the presence of the teachers to make their concept about the subject clear It means my work doesn't travel without me until I transfer 💯 percent knowledge to everyone who is present in the room or the whole world 🌎 My work means to get 💯 percent knowledge about life and the whole universe planets Teaching with a specific peace of mind is the only source to get it Due to which, I want to teach the room till the end of my life Remote Work means for the last 12 years I have been teaching you about your life on daily bases with a specific peace of mind as a Job without salary The reason for 💯 percent clear concept about life is that I become a kind teacher and coach for everyone who is present in the whole world 🌎 Otherwise, it was not possible Because everyone is only thinking and doing but the level of their success is directly proportional to the quality and quantity of their kindness My Work Not Travel
