Chile Regions since 2021
Note: Chile was divided into 13 regions (and from Apr 1980 the metropolitan region of Santiago) in 1974. Each region was headed by an Intendant (intendente), appointed by the President. By 2018 the number of regions had increased to 16. Each region was assigned a Roman numeral followed by its name. From 18 Feb 2018, the Roman numeral numbering was eliminated in the names of the regions.
Amendments to the constitution in 2017 provided for directly elected regional governors (gobernador) and regional decentralization. The first direct elections for region governors took place in May 2021. The region of Valparaso also includes the province of Isla de Pascua and the commune of Juan Fernndez.
