"The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of the phenomenon represented by the most popuÌar forms of social and religious association present in Malta during Modern Age. Confratemities brought about a programme of training of the individual conscience and of diffusion of messages of fraternity
and justice, fomenting feelings of 'democracy' and of rights defence."

The utterly unstable balance amongst european, islamic and oriental powers is reestablished on new grounds after Acri’s fall. Echoes of a new era can also be recognized as in XIV century pilgrimages begin covering the so called “Egyptian Quests”. This paper investigates two Egyptians holy places – Holy Virgin cave in S. Sergius Church in Cairo, and the Balm Garden at Matariya –, comparing western, coptic and muslim sources. It also tries a broadening of the research perspective: from a simple reading of medieval pilgrim’s reports to the study of other subjects; such as the Economy in the Mediterranean basin and Islamic Law. All this leading to the discovery that even the geography of the sacred is subject to History development, being affected by miracles and legends.
