The 28-page open letter -- which uses classical religious references and covers 24 issues such as "the killing of innocents," "killing of emissaries," "jihad," "declaring people non-Muslim," "torture," and "the caliphate" -- is a result of deliberations by dozens of experts on Islamic law and offers a point-by-point deconstruction of any claimed religious justification for ISIS's brutal actions.

In its executive summary, the letter notes that Islam forbids the killing of innocent people, including diplomats, journalists and humanitarian aid workers. It also states that any jihad may only be defensive in nature with strict rules of conduct, that it is forbidden to harm religious minorities like Christians and Yazidis, and that it is forbidden to practice slavery, destroy religious shrines or deny the rights of women.

The letter's conclusion states:

"Islam is mercy and its attributes are merciful. The Prophet (peace be upon him), who was sent as a mercy for all the worlds, summarized a Muslim's dealings with others by saying: 'He who shows no mercy, will not be shown mercy;' and: 'Have mercy and you will be shown mercy.' But, as can be seen from everything mentioned, you have misinterpreted Islam into a religion of harshness, brutality, torture and murder. As elucidated, this is a great wrong and an offence to Islam, to Muslims and to the entire world. Reconsider all your actions; desist from them; repent from them; cease harming others and return to the religion of mercy."

"The site near Dobkowice (Lower Silesia) was discovered by accident in 1971. Archaeological excavations carried out in 1972 and 1979 to 1981 have revealed 16 features; among them various kinds of pits, the remains of a ditch, and 4 burials related to the Jordanów culture. In 2012, interdisciplinary investigations were performed on site. The main research goals were the confirmation of the existence of an enclosure, a re-evaluation of the absolute chronology of the site (by radiocarbon dating) and obtaining sample material for laboratory analyses: archaeobotanical, geoarchaeological (e.g. soil/sediment micromorphology) and osteological. In order to ensure a solid research framework a three-step procedure has been adopted: 1) geophysical prospection with a magnetometer, which revealed a number of anomalies indicating the presence of archaeological features, including a double ditched enclosure; 2) excavations in designated areas, which confirmed the presence of ditches and their chronological association with the Jordanów culture; revealed a burial in one of the ditch sections and enabled the collection of sample material; 3) laboratory analyses (currently in progress): archaeobotanical, geoarchaeological, osteological, DNA and stable isotope analyses of the discovered human remains and radiocarbon dating. Such an approach to site investigation permits the examination of the archaeological record (also on the microscopic scale) and acquisition of new data, while doing limited damage to the archaeological substance. The chosen analytical techniques will hopefully deliver new information, which will enable a better understanding of chronology, land use patterns, and the function of enclosures in Neolithic Lower Silesia. The aim of this paper is to present this procedure "in action" and discuss the preliminary research results."

Ybor City is well known as an historical metropolis that brimmed with a unique and rich cultural heritage fermented amongst various Latin communities transplanted from both the Caribbean and southern Europe. Ybor City’s historiography includes many works that focus on the different ethnic groups who built the well known cigar manufacturing hub, but inadequate focus has been placed on larger economic questions and the apparent social stratification that increasingly lowered the standards of the city’s working class. By relying on Marxist theories about the nature of capitalism and the increasing exploitation of workers necessary for its survival, this archaeological study examines the living spaces actually occupied by cigar workers to demonstrate how impoverished Ybor City’s working class became as time progressed. If capitalism produces the conditions for its own downfall, so would the cigar manufacturing industry of Ybor City sew its own defeat, as its fortunes plunged alongside the living conditions of its working class. This study uses historical geographic information systems technology to georeference and allow measurement of historic maps of Ybor City and its buildings, visually illustrating how much space was available to its working class families. A correlation of this data with information found in contemporary city directories reveals a decrease over time in the average living space of actual working families. This type of study is especially pertinent today as the same economic force is impoverishing ever increasing numbers of working class families, dooming them to live in socially unacceptable conditions.

This film looks at the Andean principle of Vivir Bien or "Living Well".  This concept looks at wealth not as materialism but as time with your family and friends, clean air and water and a resilient community.

This hybrid essay/narrative attempts to give an account of the survival of a “queer” subject, specifically a trans child living in Lima, Peru, in the 1950s and 1960s. My theoretical claims may be simple, but the survival of this trans child was anything but simple. The essay argues that in the survival of this child, friendship played a vital role.
