An F1 car pours out over a million data points a second. Almost none of it reaches the driver, and that's deliberate. Picture yourself in the cockpit at 300 km/h. By F1 and AWS's count, more than 300 sensors on your car are reporting everything it does. A team may have only 58 people at the track working on the car. Many more follow the race from the factory, in what McLaren calls Mission Control. All of it has to reach you somehow. Laurent Mekies, then Ferrari's racing director, described a chain of command running from the remote garage to the garage at the track, then the pit wall, and finally the driver. On race day that can mean weather forecasts, every rival's tyres and lap pace, and your own car's data, all live. At the end of that chain is one person, your race engineer, and a large part of the job is deciding what not to say. Chris Cronin was Fernando Alonso's race engineer at Aston Martin in 2023. He chose what to pass on and when, because, as he put it, "There's a lot of peripheral stuff that a driver might think they need to know, but they don't." And drivers don't all want it the same way. Some want to be fired up, and others would rather be left alone. So while you're hauling the car into the next corner, someone on the pit wall is turning a flood into one sentence you can use. We tend to think good communication means passing everything on. Some of the best of it is knowing what to leave out.

A South Indian clerk with no degree sent his work to three Cambridge mathematicians. Two ignored him. The third thought it was a hoax. The clerk worked in the accounts office at the port in Madras, on £20 a year, less than $100. In 1913 he wrote to the third mathematician, G. H. Hardy, and he didn't hold back. He said he was "striking out a new path" for himself, and he enclosed nine pages of formulas with no proofs at all. Some of them looked impossible. Hardy put the letter down and got on with his day. But it kept nagging at him. That evening, after dinner, he took it to his colleague J. E. Littlewood, and the two of them sat down and worked through it. Some of the results, Hardy said later, "defeated me completely." They had to be true, he decided, because nobody would have had the imagination to make them up. By midnight they'd made up their minds. This wasn't a fraud. It was a genius. The clerk was Srinivasa Ramanujan, and Hardy spent the next year getting him to Cambridge. Even that was hard. By 1918 he was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and the first Indian elected a Fellow of Trinity College. He died two years later, at 32. Mathematicians are still working through the notebooks he left behind. Two people had looked at where his letter came from. Hardy looked at what was in it.

2 Hour Learning is hiring a VP of Program Management Office to make execution data good enough for executives to act on: $200,000/yr | Remote Most PMO work ends in status reports that executives read and never use to make a decision. This role owns the execution layer behind a $50M EdTech portfolio: dashboards across 10+ concurrent initiatives that expose slippage before it becomes a surprise, vendor scorecards tied to real contractual commitments, competitive bid packages, and contract controls that catch spend drifting from what was signed. AI is part of the daily workflow, from detecting anomalies to validating invoices. This isn't for you if you haven't owned at least $5M in budget across 10+ initiatives, or if contracts and SOWs are something you'd rather hand to someone else.
